That's what I wanted to know. The next bit is about what engines will fit and how easily.

What model Octavia is it?

Mk1 or Mk2

Just think of them as like Audi A3/TT quattros or VW Golf 4motions

1.8T and 1.9tdi for the mk1 (possibly VR6 if mounts are available)

and 2.0T and 2.0TDI for the mk2 (possibly VR6)

It'll be a mk1. What I basically need to know is if all the subframes for the similar cars are interchangeable, or if the engine mounts can be swapped from one subframe to another to allow a different engine to go straight in.

If my thinking is right, all the mounts from a slownotion golf should bolt straight up to the subframe, engine should fit (it fits in a lupo...) and it should be easy...

I don't see why not, as the Golf uses at Haldex 4Motion system too, with the V6, so an Octavia should also work I'd imagine

So it currently has the 1.8T 150bhp engine.

You could tune the shit out of it using S3/TT/CupraR stuff. Bigger turbo, new rods, etc, etc.

I could, but I don't like the 20v lump, it's not as strong and makes a crap noise

it's lighter and easier to tune (plus it's already there).

You could fit the VR6 lump and turbo it. If I wanted a 4wd vr6 I'd just get a Golf R32, TT 3.2 or Audi A3 3.2 Quattro

I'm sure it can be done though.

The thing is, the Octavia 4x4s are dirt cheap, cheaper than the rest of them, even the slowmotion golfs.

I could buy one, pull the 1.8t out, sell it and have a Fred car basically.

Then I'd be free to have a total sleeper, totally unlikely and much quicker than it should be.

Cheapness Jim, and they're a real sleeper, and tip runs would be awesome!
