Once i sell my Clio & VTS i'm looking to make a step towards something slightly newer.
Looking for views and personal experience on both.
MK4 GSi i have wanted for years and i always said i'd get one when i could afford to.
Type R is obviously a generally good reliable car with decent power as standard.
Not expecting the world from either, and i will probably modify either one slightly.
Just want something a bit newer that has a bit of power, looks nice and with a few choice mods can put a  on my face.

Astra coupe turbo, nearly same as a GSI but for a lot less money
EP3s are good but expensive to mod

I've heard MK4 GSi's been refered to as boring and dull to drive although they do look fantastic and can be made quicker easier. But for something to put a on your face I rekon the EP3 would be your best bet. A drivers car, more fun for spirited drives.

I couldn't buy a standard Gsi,knowing they need money spent on them to make them remotely decent.They look nice as standard though.Would have to be red too.

Without having to spend a few quid on the car to get it putting a smile on your face then the Type R would be the one to go for.
I like my Gsi and it was the 'looks' and spec that sold it to me, but Im not fussed about having to spend money to make it a better car, as handling wise with the MK4 the word 'barge' really does sum it up in standard form.
I haven't owned a CTR personally but have a couple of mates who own them, better handling, quicker than a Gsi in standard form from personal experience, but like I mentioned it was the Gsi that ticked the boxes for me with regards to looks, spec, colour, tuning potential etc.

Likely being biased but I'd go for the Gsi, if you're not expecting the world from it and have been set on one for a while then that would be my choice.

GSI for me purely as I really didnt like the fact you had to boot the shit out of the CTR to go anywhere. If the CTR had a lot more torque then i'd take the CTR as there brilliant cars to have a blast in.

nope served my apprenticship with honda drove them everyday its just a car that didnt excite me. now one with a jackson supercharger that got my juices flowing. but yeah as said i had a drive of a 220bhp astra gsi and a standard coupe turbo and found it more fun to drive

i had this argument a thousand times gsi's are a boring drive ive owned one for 4 years now but i never brought it for pure weekend fun as i have other cars and bikes i own to cater that side...
love the looks of the gsi and the general layout.... good toys.... very comfy seats no quirms here
nowadays 400 quid will see 240-245bhp from gsi with remap and decat etc
my gsi has only had new afm in 4 years and never let me down once most relable car ive owned has been fantastic and im still on the origional turbo at 67k and going strong so........
type r ive not owned older version hate the looks bit like a disability van pmsl...... so ive heard fab reliability although my friend brought one brand new and with 10k needed new starter motor and something broke within the bowls of the dashboard which if it was not under warranty would have cost like 700 quid just in labour to repair.... great handling and a lovely fun car
if the type r is quicker in a staright line my friends must have been a underforforming one as my gsi has the edge over his or well did when we had few blasts....... i am goin back 2 years though
both great cars to me but depends what u want form it really.......

Ep3 for me
Driven a gsi a couple of times both standard and modded (ebaich springs and stage 2) and they are quicker and easier to pick up speed in the real world. But other then be the prittier of the two didnt go anything for me. Also dispite been quick it didn't "feel quick"
CTR yer you have to rag it to make the most of it but its loads of fun feels light and nimble for its size and has a good chassis, gearbox and brakes out of the box 
Also have owned one for a about 2 years in total between the two I have had and am yet to have a problem with either not even an eml light  And thats with a fair amout of hard use and track days thrown at them
