I'm in a dilemma at the moment and its doing my head in!!

I currently get a choice of a BMW 1 Series(plus all fuel) or £6200 in my salary, I take the money as I'm not keen on the 1 series. However I am now in the process of being promoted which as well as a pay rise means I can have a 3 Series(and fuel) OR £7200 in my salary.

I just don't know what to do. I do F-all business miles so no need for it in that respect but the Mrs is due to give birth in June so the thought of hassle free motoring is appealing. BUT on the other hand I'm tempted to chop in the VXR and treat myself to a couple of years old 525d M Sport. I need to make a decision by tomorrow but everytime I think I've decided I change my mind!!

Help.

How much will you get taxed out of your salary for the company car?

That is the best thing to work out. On something like a 320d it won't be much due to the emmissions. You couldn't run an equivalent car, diesel, maintain for the same tax amount.

Guys at work get 1.6TDi Audi A3's. He pays £70 per month tax. Try running a car, all in, for £70 per month.

I know you get the allowance, but I dont think that'd cover it.

I'd be all over that tbh, wouldn't have to think about fuel prices ftw.

I would take the company car simply for the fuel.

Its only going to get worse so getting it paid for will be great

Plus worry free maintenance. If it breaks down you're covered by both the manufacturer warranty and the lease company. You'll have a courtesy in no time by possibly moaning at someone at work or just making 1 phone call.

Will cost me about £260 a month in tax which is comparable to running the VXR when you take everything into account.

Company car, all tax and servicing, repairs included? Easy.

Difficult one. How long do you get the company car for? 1 year? 2 years?

Guess it depends how much you want a 525d, and how much it'd depreciate in the same period as you'd have the company car.

Say its two years, that £14,400 in your pocket. Say £1.5k in fuel per year, plus servicing and consumables (£1k?) leaves you £10.4k.

Will a 525 loose £10.4k in two years? Doubt it.

As said take the car, it is worry free motoring then, servicing, mot, tax, fuel, insurance, breakdown's etc.

also with fuel prices only going to rise you could probably sneak a few of the Mrs' petrol receipt in there to claim back too

how does company car tax work?
im led to believe your tax code is reduced? no its not the 647 anymore, but something else? everyone at work says they pay stupid amounts for company car tax, but like dan says it works out at only £260....you couldn't even lease a fully maintained car for that amount

If the company car works out cheaper, I'd go for it.

You could have a lump sum for selling off the VXR which would come in handy, You could even get a toy and pay it off in one!

If all fuel is included, thats a bonus, It's only going to get more expensive at the end of the day. The same with the maintenance.

Think with most companys you get a new car every 3 years or so.

No need mate, it'd be a fuel card so no need to pay for the fuel upfront and the Mrs gets her diesel for £1 litre through work so she's on a winner anyway.

£260 a month for a brand new car with all fuel and maintenance - for me that would be perfect.

How do you go about insuring company cars, is that included as well or do you have to do that separately?
