That sounds a bit fucked up?!

Copy and paste the full email details in here including the "headers" and we can try to find out where it originated from.

(block out the email address of his wife if you want)

If his wife's email was with a web based provider like Hotmail or Gmail then yes but obviously you will need the login details...

Creepy, but how are you so certain it was 'typed'. I mean obviously it was typed, but it could have been a generated spam message... I used to get random stuff like that now and then with an old email account.

Is that a quote of the exact message?

IP address will be in the headers.

Password was probably phished before she died.

I backtraced a blank email the other day and told the guy he'd sent it by accident

also, might not even be from her email account and just made to look like it originated from her address.

I've got emails that have appeared to come from myself, but are usually trying to sell me penis pills (which I probably need)

Maybe he is lonely, and made it up, as he misses her or wants attention? People make up all kinds of things

Possible, or maybe it was just a random spam message. Still though, bit creepy.

It MAY not have been from her email address, just spoofed to look like it.

Be interesting to see the SMTP records.
