Always taken an interest in joining the Army but never really gone through with it. The tests etc don't really bother me, was just wondering if there's anyone who has been or is in the Army that could guide me to the 'good trades' sort of thing.. Been looking at 3 different roles: Tank crew, dog trainer and vehicle technician...

Thanks.

I've been told this.. but a lot of RAF trades require a good Science GCSE and I don't have it cos I used to just set fire to stuff

my dads just come out after 22 years(hes 40). he said it used to be a great life in the army but the last few years went to shit. used to get afternoons off to do sports, leave early on a friday etc but that all stopped over the last 2 years of his time.

He said he hated it come the end.

Couple mates in the RAF though said its much like civvy street but good pay

As said, RAF or Navy (if you have to) and go in for a trade.

Edit - And if GCSE's are letting you down then you can always retake them.

It's not that that I love, you could walk down the road and get killed, could get stabbed walking to your shop etc. It's the whole on your toes, combat, seeing people who contribute to this world being fucked up getting blown to bits thing.

I did 7 years in the RAF as an avionics technician. My first tour was on Harrier GR7s. I traveled the world on that sqn. I finished on 51 sqn on Nimrod R1 'spy planes'. After I left i walked into my current job at Bae Systems and am earning nearly twice as much as I was as a RAF techie and I now don't have to go to smelly hot countries all the time.

I would rather lose by a mile because i built my own car, than win by an inch because someone else built it for me.

i think you are joining the army for the wrong reasons, i.e. free will rather than an alternative to a jail sentence

I would love to fly jets but it takes many years of training.

Whats the more hardcore one im thinking of, is it the parachute regiment? Harder training etc?

A friends husband is in the bomb disposal bit. He saw a friend get quite badly injured in a blast and was injured himself, then one of his close friends who was also injured in the same blast was killed in another IED explosion while they were together. I'd try and avoid that side of it.
A lad I went to school with used to service helicopters but is currently doing UAV's, been out to Iraq and Afghan a few times but his job always keeps him away from the front line.

Getting your rocks off over people getting 'fucked up' is a messed up! But it sounds like you're suitable to be a disposable moving target for some [The Sun]Towel 'ed[/The Sun] in a field somewhere......

Russ hit the nail on the head with his comment tbf; being a frontline monkey isn't all that it's cracked up to be and everyone i know that's in says it goes south very quickly once you get to your first tour. After that you just want to get back home.
If you do want to head into the Army over the other forces then you go for something with a trade, have heard IT/Comms is worthwhile, otherwise something higher up like intelligence.

My mates brother did it, saw a few of his mates killed over there, and he's never been the same since, hardly talks to people now, obviously finds it really hard to adjust to normal life now.

Fair play to the people who do it, I couldn't

One of my brothers are in and my other brother is of in in Sept. I even started application but got the message I wouldst get in because I'm riddled with a disease. One of my mates is in the raf, other us in the navy. Both don't seem half as fun as the army from hat I've been told but my brother who OS on phase two and in his trade training as an. avionics tech said its a bit boring. A lot of people on his phase one training switched regiments so they could get to afghan quicker. Although seen the opposite effect and one young lad took drugs as a way of getting out from deployment
