It's not hard to work out without any pay details

http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/incometax/codes-basics.htm

If you are a normal employed worker under 100k, it's only funny situations it's harder to work out.

I didn't see it was 657, it was 647 for last years tax year.

Could be more complicated then, surely she should know if there's anything funny going on with benefits etc.

She doesn't get benefits.

Only thing i can think is she previously hasn't earned a taxable amount due to uni.

The things she has different to me are savings, up to 10k,

She pays into a pension scheme

But i still don't understand because she should be on 747L from what i know

She should be 747L like everyone else UNLESS she gets taxable benifits, such as a company car, healthcare, I think savings has something to do with it.

It could be because she's got a 2nd job and they've split the tax free allowance.

always thought the higher the tax code the better?

reading the link john posted, 747L means you can earn £7470 before you start getting taxed. 657L obviously means she'll only earn £6570 before getting taxed so shes worse off.

have i got that right?

Taxable benefits. Or she might owe something from last year that means tax code has been changed. Mine is 2 something this year
