I'm debating getting some as we uses to use them on the astras in the police and they were amazing on the snowy/icy roads, but we were told that you can only use them in the most severe weather. Do they cause much damage to the road if left on when the roads aren't that bad? Also, do they cause any damage to your tyres? I figure might get them cheaper in July

i would buy 500 now while they are cheap, then sell them at silly prices in the middle of snow when people suddenly want them

They get worn out if you use them on tarmac. But they are better than chains because you can drive on tarmac with them and they come off quicker than chains. They are a lot quieter too.

Snow Socks? Is that studded tyres?
They do damage the roads - A LOT!
but if they help you stay on the roads in slipping/icy conditions who cares.
In norway you can be fined for having your studs on outwith the 'season'. Their roads are all rutted to fuck after the winters

They're just textile wheel covers AK, no studs. Think you're only meant to use them in extreme conditions because they wear out quickly otherwise?
quote: Q3: What sort of conditions can I use them in?
A3: They'll improve traction on any snow or ice - even in soft, deep snow, or in wet snow. It's recommended that you take them off when you get back to tarmac, although the reality is that they probably will be driven on tarmac during those intermittent tarmac / snow / tarmac / snow conditions experienced before leaving the snow for good. (The TÜV test included 50 kilometres at 50 kph on dry tarmac. AutoSock passed this "Misuse test", but of course tarmac driving is not recommended as it increases fabric wear very considerably.)

I think they're brilliant; so much easier than chains. Almost every car in the three ski resorts I went to last year fitted these instead of chains. I've got a set for mine

Ben is right I really do. In any snow/ice you can put traction down as normal. They do wear down fairly quickly on the clear road (probably do about 20 miles or so on clear roads), but you just get out and whip them off. Only takes about 2 or 3 minutes to put them on and take them off so no worries.
Also, when you have them on, you find yourself driving through the thicker stuff on purpose as you have far more grip. Its a really weird sensation !
