This takes about 30seconds to fix and all you need is an allen key.

Main one is to look out for the rear subframe issue

had it on my 328ci (luckily i work in a bodyshop and sorted it) but its an expensive job for everyone else;
rear suspension off
fuel tank off
new underside bootfloor
packed full of strengthing foam
re-assemble and a suspension alignment after

Problem was over 10 years since they were made the chassis suffered metal fatigue and couldnt cope with the torque transferred through the rear wheels and subframe (common on 328 to M3- Few topics on google and couple of vids on youtube showing the problem)

subframe never breaks- merely pulls on the actual metal of the chassis its bolted too and rips chassis apart

will hear it from creaking or thumping when pulling away (subframe mounting points being loose) but is difficult to see visually as underseal can sometimes hide it

also suspension bushes front and rear need to keep and eye on- make sure these have been changed if its an older E46

Apart from that loved mine, great fun on the motorway but the way i drive made it very thirsty

faz

forgot to say the other day mate i was on my phone and only sent half my post

these are prone to cooling issues (my water pump went after 2weeks of ownership)

listen out for squealing belts (sign the water pump is leaking and on the way out) but see if its been changed, if not look into it

just to let you know what happened with mine, water pump went, changed then rad was old and corroded and leaked due to the water pump being back up to pressure, then changed that then due to the water system being up to full pressure the expansion tank onthe right side of the rad "popped" as they are plastic

so look into seeing if these have been done or checked, if not save up for these parts as one may go in the furture and its best to change the lot at the same time

just a FYI
