Hello all,

It's been a while since I posted on here but I trust your advice,
I'm thinking about going to look at the "can of worms" car itself, the 106 Gti and I would greatly appreciate some tips on what I look out for etc.
It's completely standard on an 02 plate with 88k,
Cheers everyone!

yeah they split at the sides and start rusting. seems to be more on the lowered ones. my pals rallye went quite bad and when i used to be on the 106oc, alot of the blogs had boot repairs

Rust on rear inner arches, under ECU tray are the most common places

Odd camber on the rear wheels and play could indicate rear axel/beam issues which is a costly fix
Gearbox should be nice and quite and non-cruchey. As they like to whine a bit if they have been abuse or the input bearing is on the way out.

Pritty good other then that the engines are pritty bullet proof but just check for the usual things

i had a y reg vtr on 70k that was rotten to fuck, strut tops started crackign and the inner wing under the ecu had a big hole in it.
my friends y reg vtr on 110k lowered as much as mine is completely rust free, not even a bit of surface rust underneath.
they can be hit and miss

Can be common for oil leaks

As said, rear beam, costs about £400 to be rebuilt by a decent company.

Clutch bearing, hard to find one that wont rattle tbh, put the clutch down and it goes away. Every one i looked at did it, and my mates does it too. His running 173bhp, mine was 142bhp, mine took a lot of abuse and a track day, his has took even more abuse and 3 track days and 2 race days, still going strong.

The oil leaks from the breather pipe that goes to the sump is an easy fix and a food bargaining point if the seller is clueless, tell tale signs of a shagged rear beam is the camber, any genuine seller shouldn't mind if you wanted to check it by taking a small trolley jack with you and gettin the wheel up in the air and pulling on the wheel to see if their is play
16v engines are strong, the boxes are the weak area, although if it's shagged a 1.1 gearbox is almost the same as the Gti box ratio wise and half the price
A lot have lumpy idle on tick over, some will claim this is because it's cammed and chipped. Take them with a pinch of salt.
The ABS sensors are prone to packing up, quiet common again if the ABS light doesn't show when the ignition is turned on the bulb has been removed. The same applies with the eml light.
Their easy to clock even the digital display clocks on the later 3 plug looms. So if it's got previous mot's to back up the mileage on ones claiming a lot lower than average miles

Rust problems as said above too, they are alright cars for the money have alot of fun in them

Theirs no set pattern to which ones rot more than others

Later ones tend to be better for less rot, it's all fixable if you can weld
