looks like the problem with the Disco isn't the Gearbox, its the Bank A EGR Valve which looks goosed. Will know for definite on Wednesday but instead of thousands, it should be a straight forward job. Why, Land Rover themselves, a Land Rover specialist and an independent 4x4 dealer who all had genuine software couldn't identify any faults at all is beyond me but meh.
Question is whether to blank it or not, some people are saying its brilliant to blank them off, with no negative side effects and better economy and others saying to definitely not blank them off as it screws up emissions and other problems.
Anyone got experience with doing either?

it messed up the emissions on my corsa with it blanked, seemed to drive better with it on to me but thats just my opinion

Never messed up the emissions on the 3 cars I've done it to before
Vauxhall themselves, as well as others, will disable or blank EGR systems to overcome repetitive faults.

Presuming its a petrol if your worried about emissions come MOT time?

I was told that the gas it gets rid of, isnt tested in the england MOT. As said vauxhall themselves to it on cars.

When the EGR valve went on my Fiat, it totally fucked the engine and cost a fortune to repair. I have a feeling it was jammed closed and when the engine was running on its enrichment cycle to warm up, it over-fuelled like crazy covering everything inside the combustion chambers with soot jamming the glow plugs into the cylinder head.
Probably best to take some experienced advice before you think about blocking it off...

you mean jammed open, if jammed closed it shouldnt cause any ill effect as its effectively blanked off. Its only when fully open/partially open you get issues right?

Trying to figure it out myself actually - the problems went away when the engine was warm so I suppose it could have been jammed open (but could that have caused problems all the time if it was constantly open?).

Are you having the goosed valve replaced? Surely just leaving them open and working would be the best option if you're going to the expense of having it repaired. They do serve a slightly different purpose on a diesel engine than a petrol engine but the end result is the same - lower NOx emissions.

LR Price to replace one is £255+VAT (cheaper at non-main dealer) and if replacing one, they recommend replacing both.
Blank off kit is £20 and the internet says get rid, best thing they've ever done, blah blah blah.

My mindset is saying that if this isn't the problem and its still the big expensive gear problem, I don't want to have just spent hundreds of pounds if it doesn't cure the issue we're having.

best thing i did on my diesel mondeo was ditch the egr, and the same with my dads landy admittidly it was a td5, but he did gain 4mpg and said it seemed to go abit better.

Ive got a bmw 525 tds with the same engine, i blanked my egr off. It makes a subtle improvement to torque at low revs, doesnt make the slightest bit of difference to emmisions. Just do it

Blank it for now and try drop on one off a breaker. Least it gets you out the shit now, then come mot time if it needs it you've got a cheap one to hand

EGR shouldnt cause a problem for emissions as it wont have an actual emissions test, just a smoke test that looks for how much particles of soot it chucks out. And iv seen some really smokey diesels and they still pass. Probably cause the engine isnt under load when the test is done

The expensive bit is the labour afaik.
The EGR valves can be had fr about £160 brand new off ebay but they are difficult to get to.

actually don't worry.
assuming bank a means left, they're only £185 plus VAT, for a Valeo unit.
Personally, I'd try to replace it rather than remove it, unless you're looking to upgrade other bits in the future...
