Don't know how enlightened you are to the redundacies announced by my work (BAe Systems). Basically due to the government's strategic defence review and scrapping harrier, nimrod and slowing down purchases of Typhoon. Bae are cutting several hundred jobs. My job as an aircraft electrician is one under threat. of the 308 electricians on our site, 154 are now surplus. this means I have a 1 in 2 chance of having a job by March.

The company has offered a secure job at an RAF base maintaining RAF aircraft but it comes with a £18k pay cut

It would mean moving to the other side of the country too.

This is before they tell us if our job is safe or not.

Big gamble!!

What kind of redundancy package could you expect if at all? Presumably taking the RAF job would remove the possibility of redundancy.

If that's the case, work out how long you'd survive on your 'package', factor in how transferable your skills are in another industry and then stick it out for roulette in marsh.

18k is a lot to lose for anybody, but the relocation would me more reason not to bail out early for myself.

tbh in current climate aslong as you could live on the reduced wage then id take that if it was secure whilst looking for other jobs.

either that or if your a lucky person or know your good at your job and better than half of the others then stay where you are.

Losing the 18k is relative. If I were to lose 18k of my salary I wouldn't have a pot to piss in but I'd imagine you would still be earning a 'decent' enough salary....bearing in mind what the alternative could be?

I suppose it all depends on personal circumstance but I'd take it if I could afford to live on the wages post drop. Things will not always be as bleak as they are.

its a tough choice. i take it theyre offering new positions with a new pay scale rather than cutting your pay if you dont get made redundant? i thought it was illegal to cut someones pay because youve cut a contract?

Due to the size of BAe they have the company split up into different smaller companies. It is a new job and new contract. They aren't forcing us into it so there's no legal problem for them.

I see what you mean hammer, I currently earn £44k and would get no redundancy package if i moved jobs and would go onto £26k. Big difference as it's losing half a salary

i personally wouldnt take a pay cut as big as that, but if it was anything up to 5k i would.

depends on the cost of living in the area you would be moving to.

I'd take the cut as at the end of the day you're still in work, i'm currently only earning around 12k a year before tax working late shifts, a bloke at work used to earn 30k a year and has now had to go to 12k a year as he was made redundant from a job that took him 5 years to train for

Thats a tough one for anyone, although if I was in your position I think I'd take the cut. The way things are you would be out of work for ages if you were one off the ones to be made redundant. Your going to be guarenteed an income if you take the cut. Its a big gamble. Guarenteed income Vs. potentialy fuck all.

If I took a £18k pay cut I'd be on £500 per annum

It seems it's a big choice to take and you've probably got used to the £44k living, but £24k isn't exactly a poverty wage and definitely livable. Just not the same standard of living.

£24k is certainly better than the dole!

Ouch Ste, thats a cut and a half, so risky not to take it though. Bet you feel you're sat at a roulette table here deciding whether to put everything on red or black

Suppose you should firstly have a look around, see what other jobs are going that you could get and if the money is better and theres a fair few options, maybe stick it out and see if you get cut or not. If theres fuck all out there then go for the RAF job, better than nothing, at least you'll be able to look for better work whilst earning what is still a decent wage.

How long is that offer open for?
Is the offer open to everyone?
How many positions are available at £26k?

Finding another job earning £44k could be an issue at the moment, but what's worst case redundancy package and find alternative work in current area?

I took a pay cut when I got made redundant 3yrs ago but was only £1k so can't even compare, that got more than made up after 6months when was given a pay rise!

How would you be compared to 300+ other people if came down to scoring for redundancy?

id hold out tbh, on that basis. its nearly 50%.

if you worked 6 months and then were out of work 6months it would be similar to just working the other job. id take the risk

I can only say what I'd do and that would be chance it and see if I got kept on where I was. No way I'd be relocating, especially for less money.

All depends how much redundancy you could get as a minimum.

If its enough to live on for 6 months plus the fact that you could earn 12 months new wage rate in 6months at the current rate means you technically have a year to find something before any savings really come into it.

Is there many other jobs you could do with your skill set? You can earn 26k in tescos these days!

You have a 50% chance of keeping it. There's also the relocation. I wouldn't, if it happens use redundancy money to help find another job locally

A lot depends on what the availability of jobs is like in your specialise area.

it sounds like its quite a specialised job i.e. not something like IT where you could try and move over to another areas.

If there are no jobs around at the moment then a job is better than no job. That said it depends oh whether you are happy to move. Where is it moving to - what is the area like, what are hour prices like in comparison.
