Who's had one & what to look out for?? Im thinking about getting one, cheap & a lot of car for the money.

Decided I cant be hacked with expensive cars to sit on the drive depreciating at an alarming rate plus i'm wanting to move house so that takes priority.

Looking at a 2001 225bhp Quattro in Dolphin Grey for £4.5k, 90k miles FSH, belt & W/pump done 6k miles ago!!

What generally goes wrong with these??

ignition coils (now replaced for free)
EGT sensor
speed sensor
window regulators
MAF sensors

Can't think of any more, probably about it.
Usually sensors go.

Oh, and my friend's turbo went at 125k

So nothing that cant be repaired in a few hours in the afternoon by a complete amature then! No massive concerns with anything more serious than consumables!?

I'd recommend a copy of Vagcom or an ECU error code reader.

Since having my 2nd EGT sensor fitted mine has been great.

Plenty guys on Svag have vagcom, i'm sure someone will happily interrogate it for me if needs.

Biggest prob is the dashboard have a look on the tt forum for more info, the fuel and temp gauge misread you can get the actual values on the air con screen to compare with the dials to check the dash, look up the 49c trick.

Other than that the doors drop because they're so heavy and make sure the window goes up and down with the door as they're expensive

I had a mapped 225 TT and now have a 3.2 with dsg and it's much nicer to drive and sounds awesome. Mpg is better than my mapped 225 also (only slightly tho)

But as said a lot of car for the money!

pretty good but IMO ridden with electrical faults

Hazrd switch replay stops indicators from working
window drop
coils - if early models
Dash pods
roof rail corrosion
2nd gear can go on them
Dual mass fly doesn't like abuse - can be expensive

good cars though - enjoyed my 225

a mapped car will certainly have its affect on the clutch and gear box

tt-fourm is an excellent site - great users and help out there

also get good examples coming up for sale on there

IMO they still look modern even against the new model

mine had a clunk on second gear sometimes and it also had the dash problem, the window problem, coil issues.

My alarm would also randomly go off, no sound just flashing

also check haldex service has been done - at 20k intervals the oil needs changing and at 40k its the filter - not a big job but requires a special tool so costly if you get Audi to do it

Oh, I forgot the speed 2 fan fault. The resistors fail which is a £400 fix from dealers as both fans have to be replaced.

I fitted a Nime box on mine for £90 to solve this issue, but my fans still only work on one speed.

some VAG 1.8T like to use oil also - my TT was fine but my mates S3 liked the oil

But apparently its normal for them to consume oil

His used about 1 litre every 3k miles which is reported as within limits
