we've been having this debate at work:
If you had the choice of going 500 years into the future or 500 years into the past (and stay there) which would you chose?
You have to go by yourself but you can fill a standard suitcase with a normal airline weight limit to take with you.
I personally would go backwards 500 years and take:
* Amazon kindle with the contents of wikipedia
* 28" 12 guage shotgun (with as many shells as possible)
* A big knife.
* A load of sanyo eneloop batteries
* A small high effeciency solar panel
* Some Soap / shampoo etc.
* Underwear.
* A massively high power LED torch.
* Some gold.
* A pack of disposable lighters.
And I'd make sure I was wearing some warm clothes and boots.

Furture.
We know what it was like 500 years ago, that would be a complete waste of time.
500 millions years maybe but 500 years forward would be much more interesting.

500 years in the future.
I'd take something rare that'll be worth shitloads as an antique.

Few problems with the future:
A) You dont even know if the planet/humanity exists.
B) You'll be rather un-educated and backwards.
C) Knowing what has happened is a MASSIVE benefit, why not have a 500 year head-start over a 500 year handicap

what vehicle would you take though? We had the same conversation over the weekend but focussed it on a BTTF scenario of time travel by vehicle.
We came to the conclusion that a Dakar prepared Bowler Nemesis with secondary fuel tanks etc would be best if you're going back in time

It's 500 years ago though and it's crap compared to now.
What will you do if the kindle breaks after 2 days? same with your torch and solar panel.
You'd basically be stuck and die of the plague.

Its backwards but even the most basicly educated 21st century dweller would be a genius..
These are times before Newton, just knowing how to make a paper aeroplane and use a lever would make you a legend!

I'd go back to the past, the future would be nice to see, but you wouldn't know anyone or anything.
at least with the past you could find past you know of from our history etc

Appearing educated just because everyone else is stupid isn't my idea of being a legend.
It's too far back to 'invent' things from today before you die, what use is a laptop when they don't have anything to build one, or the internet, or TV's, etc etc.

also, you went back in time 500 years, you would be killed as a witch, if you went forward 500 years in time, you would already be famous as the person that they sent forward 500 years in time, have a welcome party waiting before you even arrived.
