what wuld people say about second hand ones...
like say for example its a decent make and advertised as 'used a small handful of times'
do they not need calibrated or something like?

ive always used this one too while i was working in garage. Not cheap but great quality, measures angle aswell as Nm
but as said, the halfords one is just as good for the price of it

Lots of good cheap second hand ones on eBay. I got a Britool EVT1200A one for about £35-£40. Range of that is 25-135Nm - perfect for a lot of torque settings on a Corsa.

problem with second hand is you dont know how its been treated by the previous owner -
ie dropped or used as a hammer
left wound up
etc
can loose its calibration this way

True, but it's still cheaper to buy second hand and then pay for it to be recalibrated than buying new. My one is in good condition, it's ex MOD so it's highly likely it was properly looked after.
