Been looking at these recently, particularly the 3.0d sport version around a 2004 so facelift model. Has anyone got any experiences with them or know anyone who has? Seen one localish up for 9k which has done 87k miles, FSH and 1 owner from new which doesn't look to bad from the photo's.

Looking around the web theres a few stories about gearboxes and turbos going and being pretty expensive to replace, but not sure how common they are or if its the usual hyped up internet stories.

Anything specific to look out for?

i work for a bmw dealer in luton, i generally find its more little bits and bobs on the x5's like lekky boots not working or radios not getting signal etc. usually the engines are pretty good on them.

Are you a balding, forty-ish bloke with sun glasses?
Do you have a trophy blonde bint wife who can't actually drive very well?
Do you live in a bought council house? Is your idea of off-roading parking half on the kerb, half on the road outside your kid's (who MUST have an Irish name like Connor) school?
Can you drive .0005mm from the car in front just because you think you're never going to hurt yourself as you have a two tonne cock extension?
If you can answer 'yes' to most of the above you should go out and buy one.

Went to look at the x5 but it had an engine problem so couldn't take it for a test drive. Said something about the glow plugs needed changing and while they were doing that they were replacing the gasket to do with them. Didn't really know what he was on about but the fact it's broken put me off a bit!

So I went to look at another one that was a couple grand more and took that for a test drive. Loved it to be fair! So big, comfy and really easy to drive. Had some poke too. Only thing puttin me of was 6 previous owners and 88k miles. Would that put anyone else off? It's at elms BMW dealership's trade section so you get 3 months warranty and it's been checked over by BMW themselves.

Any thoughts?

Nope wouldnt put me off. I have loads of cars and never keep them more than a year. Not because they are fooked and i want shot because i want to avoid bills - i just get bored. I like change.

I actually loose money every single time as I spend money on them getting them upto shape and sell them for less

what people need to remember is that these are 40k+ motors (i think) so a 4k repair isn't actually that bad going by the original sale price.

it's the same with any premium motors.

if you want cheap repair bills buy an old mondeo.

Aye but when you pay 15k for a car, the last thing you need is a big bill. See where you're coming from though.

Going by that a new gearbox at 3k on an Astra VXR is fine?

That's not how it works. A 3rd of the cars value on a repair is too much unless it's something exotic, not a poor drug dealers chariot.

that's exactly how it works.

you expect a gearbox change on an x5 to cost a few hundred quid?
