whilst working on my car, i stupidly left the ignition on for ages with the roof down. this meant a nice flat battery.

went and bought some jump leads as i've never owned any before (first time using them).

joined them up on both cars before starting the fiesta up.

this swiftly resulted in a massive spark and smoked, followed by the jump leads burning the plastic has now melted onto the ends.

what did i do wrong? absolutely shit my pants as the fiesta wouldn't start for a minute or so after and the z4's dash lit up with warning lights.

Shit

Must've been the wrong way round, there's not really any reason for the negatives to burn out otherwise.

If both cars still run you've had a lucky escape, that can seriously spoil your day normally.

it does indeed i've been working on the car since 1pm, had the roof down so i could move around easier inside. battery died and started to rain, had no leads so had to go and buy some.

I guarantee you'll check at least three times whenever you jump a car from now on.

won't be doing that again

ian, are there any long term problems after this happens? the fiesta wouldn't start at first but works fine now. the z4 required some revving but now seems fine too.

yes battery is under the boot floor.

No if they run you should be OK.

There was a guy on one of the Fiesta forums killed his ECU, new car as well so nothing second hand, ended up bending over in Fords for a new one.

Would think they're OK, perhaps just lost a bit of memory or something. Not too much to worry about compared to them not starting.

reminds me of when i bought a new battery for my DR350 and connected it the wrong way round, a wire burned out straight away but it would still spin the starter motor, the wrong way i decided something had broken inside the casing and had it all apart, was messing with it for hours til i realised what i had done
