Thought I would ask for some advice seen as im on bmwsport
Looking at the 316 compact and have a few questions
I prefer the e46 front end, but it only seems to come in a 1.8 whereas the older e36 comes in a 1.9
Whats the difference in the performace and could the front ends be swapped from the newer to the older if the engine in the older one is better?
Seems like a decent car for not a lot of money with decent looks apart from the chopped rear end Just need lowered and some bigger bmw wheels

Why go for a compact? Are they much cheaper to buy/insure than a coupe?

As above, not a fan of the compacts. My brother used to have a 318iS with the 1.9 but it was only after he bought it he found they don't have the best of reputations. I can't remember now what wasn't great about them as it was probably 5 years or so ago now but I do remember the exhaust manifolds are known for cracking and it's supposed to be a ballache of a job, my brother had 2 different garages tell him they didn't want to take it on then when he found somewhere that'd do it, it cost him around £400 for a second hand manifold fitted The price new wasn't even worth considering iirc.

Couldn't be doing with spending BMW money on an E46 compact then keep thinking I bought a mk4 Astra everytime I saw the back of it.

If I had to get a compact it would be an E46 one, the 36's are too dated imo both inside and out.
Has to be an msport with the chunky bumpers aswell.

My brother has had his E46 compact for 5 years. Bought it at 19 as it was much cheaper to buy and insure than a coupe.
Not a bad car imo. Been reliable enough and drives well.
