Just had a message on ebay for my BMW with the potential buyer asking if I would accept payment in full via paypal for the car.

WTF? why would someone do this? Is he expecting to get full paypal protection for his purchase?

IE if he decides he does not like the car once he has purchased it or a button on the dash board falls of he will open a dispute and paypal will rape my bank and take all the money back

Perhaps easier than getting the amount from the bank? My bank only let's me take out about 2.5k a day.

Possibly, maybe it is quite innocent but I get nervous with paypal at the best of times let alone accepting a payment for nearly 5k through it. What if he found a fault (that I am not aware of) or drove it home and something failed and he opens a dispute? tricky ground, am not sure.

I just replied to him saying bank wire or cash only.

Get this........the bloke that bought my RS paid the balance minus £1k by bank transfer prior to seeing the car, with just one short phone call and a few emails to secure a sale.

I was a bit taken a back!

Paypal rapes you on charges, you'll probably lose about a few hundred quid.

Yeah I would just say £50 or £100 non refundable deposit and the rest in cash, or cash into your bank a/c.

Probably a scam, but there's perfectly logical reasons. For example he might not have the cash and wanting to pay by credit card, hence using paypal, since you're not a trader.

Yep but then you're open to credit card charge back claims, just not worth the risk.

He's said that or Bank transfer, surely he'll just say he aint got it, at least with paypal I have a receipt of payment ?

First Comment

Can you even get 5k out the bank ? Mine only let's me take out about 2.5k a day.

Second Comment

It'll without doubt be something dodgy.

That not how it works with cars though is it, cash, bank transfer or bankers draft are the standard methods, anything else is instantly strange.

Paypal charging extortionate fees are the main reason you wouldn't do it though.

How have people bought cars all this time without paypal, turning up with a lot more than 5k cash?

Oh true and if I was in the same situation I'd want cash or transfer. However this person might just be genuine and really want proof rather than taking 5k straight out his bank. Easiest thing to do is to give him a call, explain your reservations and that you will be charged for it etc and see what he says.

i dont understand all this "only withdrawing 2.5k a time"

if you view a car you leave deposit and then arrange with the bank to collect the money in a large sum, i withdrew 5k from Natwest without any notice, my dads bank you need to ring up in advance though.

thats the idea of a deposit surely? to secure the deal while you gather the cash and a suitable time to collect.

id accept cash only infront of me only, if they werent happy with that then so be it and they can look elsewhere.

My bank wouldn't even let me withdraw £2000 without making an appointment first, I turned up and asked for £2000 and they just looked at me like I was crazy.

They told me to try the other store which was about 10 minutes walk away, to which they said we can only give you £1000, so asked if I could get £1000 from one store and £1000 for the other to which they said "you can only withdraw once a day" complete joke, a lot of hassle for your own money so I could see why people would want to do it with easier methods.
