Cracking little cars, only problems I've experienced were electrical. You can screw the boost and fuelling up and it will go pretty well, can unplug the EGR as well but makes it a bit smokey!

Yeah you can turn up the fuel and boost quite easily, there are loads of guides on 306 forums and youtube if you get stuck. Also a front mount is definitely worthwhile performance wise, my brother rebuilt a lot of his engine last year and added a front mount:

My old 1

Main thing is cambelt. Due every 36k iirc.
Can be tuned fairly easily if it has a bosch pump just by turning up the fuel and boost.
Nippy little cars and good mpg.
Had mine a year and a half and replaced:
Cambelt, water pump, aux belt
Glow plugs
Wheel bearing
Discs and pads
and the exhaust seen as it fell off doing 90 in the outside lane of the M5

Is it smokey? Generally when they have been tweeked they are a lot more smokey (dependant on how much they have been turned but as it's not exact if the engine labours smoke usually belows out).

I had one, one of the plus points is there cheap as owt to mod.
I got mine like this;

and got it looking like this;

from collecting bits from scrap yards mainly. Loads of interchangeable parts between the 3 phases.
