Who's a fan?
I've just listened to the whole of live at reading on the way home.
I can't think of a band which is as awesome, I really can't.
Listening to thousands of people singing lithium is sad, it'll never happen again

Pearl Jam is as, and even way more, awesome than Nirvana.
Kurt Cobain was a cunt with serious mental issues, but the music he and the rest of the group produced was very good and influenced a generation.
Still, I think the best thing to come out of Nirvana is Foo Fighters.

I used to be a massive fan, like lee said I need to be in the mood for them these days! I could listen to the unplugged album anytime though, it truly is fantastic IMO!

Was a massive fan as a teenager, even had a Fudge Packin' Crack Smokin' T-shirt. Grew out of them quickly but still go back to the albums from time to time. Unplugged in New York and From The Muddy Banks of the Wishkah are great
Pearl Jam and Soundgarden were better though.

Sorry it's just a common retort from musical snobs, because of the whole 'Nirvana ripping off the Pixies' thing

I like both.
I realise that the Pixies were a big influenece for Nirvana. Nothing wrong with that tho.

pixies are one of the best live bands I have ever seen - Surfa Rosa/Come on Pilgrim is a masterpiece
Personally think Pavement are by far and away the best band of that era

I've never got the nirvana ripping off the pixies thing. I can see the influences, sure, but ripping off is a tad extreme IMO

The Smells Like Teen Spirit guitar riff is nicked from Debaser by the Pixies, plus there's the whole quiet LOUD quiet LOUD songwriting style similarity

Similar riffs/bass lines on that one example. Quiet loud quiet was what I was referring too when I said I could see the influences.

All the problems, drug addiction and mental health issues are what made him the type of musician he was. Music inspired by the intense emotions that come from these things.

Sorry, but you're an idiot if you truly think that.
Read up on the case. It was very well documented that it was a suicide. The fact alone that he'd tried to do it on two or three occasions before he was succesful is a pretty clear sign.
Also, if you look at his life and upbringing, there's no real surprise in him being a bakset case to the point where he'd blow a hole in the back of his skull with a sawed off.

Absolutely, no doubt about it.
The thing is though, lots of great artist have troubled pasts.
I always think Eddie Vedder and Kurt Cobain are good to compare. They both came from troubled homes and had a lot to struggle with. They both used (good) music to express themselves. They came to fame at around the same time with a similar style music at almost the same age.
Kurt Cobain however was a cunt who ran around yelling at everyone and feeling sorry for himself and ultimately blew his brains out.
Eddie Vedder was always very sympathetic and likable. He took on TicketMaster with the rest of Pearl Jam and looked out for the fans and people in general at every turn. They still do, btw, as none of them were winey pricks that killed themselves.

Yes then they were smug bastards and wrote a song about it.
( know the song was about years before Cobain killed himself BTW)
