what would you expect/be willing to pay to track your pride and joy?
Unique log in to view your Vehicle.
Satellite images.
Geo fence config with alerts
Power loss alerts etc
might have a new system with work I can sort,
£249 installed first year included, and then around £40 a year afterwards.. no contract and vehicle transferable

Depends how good the GPS antenna is when you bury the phone within the car. And you're still going to need to wire in power and keep the phone topped up (most tarrifs have an expiry on the credit).
Great as a temporary solution but it's certainly a bodge over a proper system.

You couldn't covertly install a phone as a security device, simple as.
The data would cost.. the information it transmits would be inaccurate and as you said it would be a bodge,
Rob apologies, Some of the kit we sell is thatcham accredited so yes It would reduce the insurance. This particular type would be down to your insurance company. we've fitted some into a taxi company recently and the insurance dropped by a huge amount so It always worth calling first to check

Also It would have to overcome the signal jammers too. If it didn't do that I wouldn't pay anything for it especially as a jammer is about £20

I'm not a randomer, we actually supply a handful of trackers for the local police, 4 different councils and some massive haulage companies.
Got over 3000 trackers transmitting in the UK
I don't make nothing out of it, just thought if anyone was interested I could perhaps sort them a deal

oh, and also, we have GSM triangulation so it will pin point a rough location even if the GPS is obstructed

You certainly could install it somewhere reasonably well hidden, not as a well as a proper product and as mentioned you then have the issue of GPS signal/antenna.
However, it wouldn't be an less accurate than a proper tracker (if you managed to get a decent sat lock) and cost in data would certainly be cheaper than £40 (if using it for tracking when the vehicle is stolen).
But i agree, it would be a bodge and what you're offering is pretty well priced compared to competitors (obviously depending on how well built the device is, installation and features).
For the £250 + £40 p/y sub, what do you actually get? Is it just a tracker, installation and a web based portal? Is there any limits on usage?

Comes with battery backup, has motion and various other sensors, built in antenna (if your product has a built in antenna and not an external one how is it any better than a phone?) cheap phones won't be waterproof as standard though.
If you ever took it on track you could have another program just for track already sitting on it reporting back to something else via wifi.

The GPS puck will be about 20% the size. so it will be far less reliable and accurate.
So you talk of changing the settings when you go to a track or something else, so you're not going to covertly install it?
and the statement above about it being cheaper than £40 a year.. not a chance.
constantly updating data, what tariff will you have it on? or will you have it on PAYG?
how exactly will you triangulate through the phone? what software?
as much as you disagree with me, its a complete and utter bodge,
Like mentioned above, i've no interest in making anything out of this, I've seen a few people asking about GPS tracking recently and I thought I could offer them an affordable yet sturdy solution.
£249 installed with the first year free is a bloody good price
especially when the hardware is cost our company over £100

The point about the phone is you get all the hardware you need in a 50 quid unit, therefore there's no reason why you unit should cost any more

I don't know what you'd use for data, that was one of my questions.
You don't have to have physical access to change stuff on the phone either.
Any android phone will be triangulating automatically if it's not got GPS signal.
I'm not disagreeing with you, a phone obviously isn't the best for all situations, it's a pretty good cheapish alternative for a lot of them though.
