I have always been in the motor trade (level 1,2 mechanics, level 1 motorsport) whether it be a small mechanic business to valeting for a subaru main dealer to paint correction/detailing. Over this time I have gained a vast amount of customer service, telephone bookings, one to one enquires etc but also have a very professional appearance so the career choice of becoming an estate agent is not so distant in my opinion.

Once the paint correction business folded, I went/am in and out of work to really find where I want to go in life as a career is concerned.

For the past few months I have been looking into and doing my homework as such as becoming a trainee/apprentice estate agent, I'm not 100% sure how to go about this (nothing local is advertised) so im sure it's all going to be down to cold calling each individual local estate agent.

Its just the initial cold calling that is a little daunting

Has anyone got any 'genuine' pointers/tips to help or information or maybe an in site if anyone is actually a estate agent themselves.

Not a pointer, but the starting salary is shocking.

And go in to the estate agents, don't phone,. when looking.

I'd say stick with what you're good at and make a career out of it. Probably more jobs in the motor trade than housing market at the moment.

Starting salary isn't shocking compared to some industries. No less than 16k.

If you can get a few years experience, and get to know absolutely everything, get a decent commission contract and you can make good money.

A friend has his own estate agents, about 4 shops. He never talks about money, but you can tell he's doing well.

This.

You are basically a salesman. It's not something I could do.

Having said that, you can make good money doing it. The real money is in starting your own estate/letting agency.

I'm not oblivious, I've bought a house and been involved in the selling of a couple.

If I could put stuff on rightmove I could do it myself, as they know and why they prevented normal people putting stuff on there.

You should also consider being a recruitment consultant. They are very similar skillsets.

You just lie and sell stuff all day.

Dont cold call. Actually go into the shop and ask. If they say they have no jobs going, leave them a CV.

I would be more impressed you had made the effort than just calling or emailing.

Can easily make a good 6 figures as a recruitment consultant if you specialise in the right industry.

Brother works for one in London starting salary 21k, can go onto commission after 6months and could make 4k a month commission selling 6-10 houses.

BS in what way? You're a middle-man passing on CV's then skimming cream off the top for the duration of the contract.

Depends where you live as well, as you get a percentage based on property price/rental amount.

If you live somewhere that the average house price is £200k, you'll most likely earn less than somewhere that the average house price is £400k.

You're also the middle man for the entire hiring process including negotiations, contract management etc.

So a bit more than just passing on CVs. But there is too much dishonesty for my liking. I couldn't handle having to call people up, pretending to have a role, getting their CV/details then making up some bollocks about the headcount not being approved etc.

Ok, I put it simply, but you're still a middle-man passing from one side to the other essentially, I certainly don't view it as a difficult job and see it as something any 'tard could do.

It's not difficult, but im more of a 'something's either right or wrong' kind of guy and I see recruitment as a load of smoke and mirrors.

CVs for a start tend to be full of bullshit.

I have a mate who worked his way from an apprentice to a director of the biggest estate agents locally.

He is absolutely minted. Earning five figure sums a month.

Also manages to grab lots of bargain property's when he sees desperate people, so has a great portfolio of property because of it.

Far from a crap career IMO.

It's not a bad job to be in, not completely sales driven and pressurised like car sales and recruitment. Selling property is fairly easy, it's a numbers game, seeing them through to completion does take some skill though. The main problem with sales is that it often takes 3 months to complete a sale, it can then fall through and you get nothing. Lettings is easier money but there's a fair bit more to learn in terms of legalities. Neither are brainless or unskilled jobs, that's pretty narrow minded of anyone to say, you could say that about any job in the correct context.

If you go for one of the national chains you'll be pushed to sell mortgages, insurances etc rather than property. Saying that though the training is often better and more structured, you'd then move on. Look our for Countrywide, might be called Bairstow Eves where you are, though there are others. Check their website for recruitment events.

To stand out from the crowd i've also put myself on a building surveying degree, now in my final year. Didn't have to do it but it means I know a hell of a lot more than the others, plus I can offer professional services too. Can also fall back on it if all goes pear shaped. I do enjoy it, it's nice not to be stuck in an office all day.

I get people dropping in CVs all the time, it's pretty annoying to be honest, but it is a good start. Totaljobs.co.uk seem to advertise positions fairly frequently, have a look on there.

I actually got an interview for a sales executive at Arnold clark, while waiting to be called in I was watching the staff doing there job first hand, i literally was cringing at them and thought this is not for me.

Obviously as you have stated the sales can take 3months to complete, you get involved with buyers, really get an in site of there needs and have satisfaction from a sale.

Not so pushy and cold as a car salesmen which I totally could not do and was so glad I didn't get a 2nd interview..
