Was feeling good today. Then came to work where my computer has updated and shutdown on its down, deleting all the work I didn't save . Moral is, save regularly.

Yep, always do

Reason is it takes about 30 minutes to start up.

Yep! Honestly my machine is older than Jesus. Everyone else except for two of us got new machines last year.

But it updated itself Mike, and then shut down

Had it not updated, you still wouldn't have been in any worse a position though. Saving the work causes increased boot up time but had it not updated, it would still be as it was left the night before so boot up time is unimportant. The boot up time will only really matter to you if you have a power cut or if it updates shortly before you arrive, either way, the increased boot up time has got to be a winner over the data loss.
