Is it worth paying to get a diagnostic check on my car if there is no engine warning light?

My car is running rough low in the rev range with a slight hesitation at 2k. It's also using loads of fuel.

I'm pritty sure it's a sensor as if I reset the ecu it runs perfectly for a few days then gets worse. The sensors are quite expensive on this car (04 type r civic) so I'd prefer not to just start replacing them radomly.

Is it worth paying for a check to try and isolate the problem or do they only work if it throws up an engine warning light ?

there may still be fault codes without the light on.

ive had it on mine (56 volvo s80) there was 7 codes and no light

try taking it to an independant garage as there less likely to charge full price if anything at all when theres nothing wrong

One diagnostic at a garage could probably pay for your own piece of kit to do it.

I like the idea of buying my own but surley there's a difference between the large , expensive piece of kit in my local garage and something for £30 of the bay?

Nope they all read the codes then wack them into google

If you have an iphone its around 27.99
Android Blutooth one for less than 10

Then the applications are free

Even some of the cheap ones tell you what the codes mean rather than just a code

I bought a scanner for £20 off eBay, tells me everything I need and deletes faults. Also comes with a book with all the codes in it. Garage ones just do more like coding keys and airbag lights.
I've charged people at work a fiver to tell them the code now its paid for itself.
