all depends on how deep your pockets are and if you want n/a or forced induction?

Read up on these engines. There are very slight differences between the 2. One has smoother inlet ports or something like that and produces an extra 3-4bhp over the other engine.

Earlier c16xe is better than the later x16xe.

If you've got deep pockets you could go for a race-tuned engine, ~220bhp+ but for close on £10k. Or a tuned X16XE could see 150bhp for a fair bit less than £10k.

What about a Honda B16B engine? I've toyed with this idea, almost 170bhp standard.

Get a C16XE. They're much faster and stronger than the X16XE. Totally different and better.

as it's for sprints, would an 2.0L 8v engine not be a good ideal?

If you want 150bhp, get the lowest mileage engine you can. Which these days will more than likely be a x16xe /x16xel.

Change the rod bolts for ARPs and a set of ITB's Blue c20xe injectors with a set of 264 cams and a good exhaust manifold and system, you'll get close to 170Bhp, wont break the bank, spend some money on a diff and final drive in the gear box and you'll have a good sprint engine.

I had 160bhp out of a standard engine. Just Itb's and exhaust.

Over 180bhp actually

It isn't cheap to get good power out of the c16/x16xe.

180bhp even, but you'll prob drop the 10bhp cause it's been ragged to shit. Didn't some lad on mig put one into a Nova?

And Eck is right, quite dear to get big power out of a vauxhall 1600.
