I love Manchester. I'm not from there or even a Northerner (by birth) but I worked in the centre for 3 years and its awesome. Its changed loads in the last 10 years and has gone really cosmopolitan, especially in the summer. Always something going on. 
IMO people who think its shit must have either been to the shit areas (which every city has), or just parked, walked round the Arndale, then come home.

Not a fan of Cheshire Oaks. There's nothing there i can afford to buy 
Tafford Centre, again i can't afford to buy anything..

We are off to lakes next Thurs for 3 nights. Booked a nice boutique hotel in ambleside. If it snows and we can't get there i'll do my nut.

There is a few nice Boutique ones up there. My sister has been to Windermere Suites and theres one on facebook called The Cranleigh. You can get a discount there if you follow them on facebook.
