Is there any real advantages to have drilled and grooved discs over plain?

Apparently...because of the holes they run cooler which makes them work better.

If there's truth in it or not, idk.

Drilled for cooling.

Grooved to clean the pad.

Plain if you don't want them to crack.

Drilled is a gimmick it won't really cool anything over what the veins offer.

Grooved have some benefit as Ian highlights

company i work for does some fancy grooving that apparently is supposedly (please take note on that im only a messenger here lol) better than the straight grooved discs, its like a selcetion of C shapes in the disc, first i have ever seen or heard of but it looks pretty funky and apparently does the job better than stanadard stright grooves , will see if i can get them to do some on some standard 2 litre 286 discs..

There's also some science behind removal of gasses although I've never really been interested in knowing why that is important.

I run plain on my road cars and the track one, never really wanted to shorted the life of the disc for a marginal benefit.

i know for from experience that drilled discs will warp much quicker than standard or standard grooved discs

Very little other than aesthetics, especially on a road car under everyday conditions. I'd always recommend a plain disk.

tried all types and found for road use plain discs work best all round with high quality pads. curved groves are better than straight plenty of companies offer these, but as said the life of them is reduced due to cracking and rust build up in the groves and cracks around drillings in drilled discs.

Firstly its not a supercar in question.

Secondly they wont be ordinary discs.

Doesn't matter, pointing out your errors. Better to point out your errors than simply drop in some keyboard digs in other eh

Brakes get hot when used. End of.

Thought you may say that, hence why I added ceramic and steel discs.

My bikes also are drilled, as are most bikes. Both steel race discs, and road discs.

drilled discs are usually high quality steel discs not cheapo discs from ebay with some random holes in them.

edit:

what sort of disc temps are likely to been seen on a bike?

edit 2:

is that tyre on the front of that bike the wrong way round?

Pics wont load so no idea what point you are trying to make.

However drilled discs on the setup the OP is talking about are pointless.

Regarding cracking and people not seeing it, its usually fine hairline cracks around the very edges of the holes, so explains why a lot of people may not have noticed

Unsure for mine. I know I need a good half lap at the very least (using tyre warmers too so already have grip and can get going straight away) for them to start working in any way. Caught me out a few times Braking is my strong point and they get used really hard.

I reckon at least 200 degrees though when braking hard and they are working well.

MotoGP brakes run about 700-900 degrees IIRC.
