Claiming tax relief for washing your own work uniform
If your tax code is 944L
Ring 03002003300
Follow the options. Press 2 then 1 then 2. Listen to the message then hold
You will need your NI number, current address, dob and employers name
Tell them you believe that your tax code is wrong as you wash your own works uniform.
You wash t shirts, jumpers and fleece with company logos on. In my case my company launders our overalls only and not clothing.
When they ask job title say engineer
New tax code should be 952L
If not prompted ask for a rebate on tax paid to 09/10 tax year.
You should get £80 a year back
Obviously only do this if it's true

I would rather lose by a mile because i built my own car, than win by an inch because someone else built it for me.

I believe my work provide or used to provide washing facilities for our clothing, so will need to get that checked.
I've never used it though and have always washed my own uniform.

Did this at my old job. Couldn't claim too far retrospectively and don't really know if it worked.
However, that said, it's worth a punt!

Just checked mine and I'll have to do it through self assessment; as I have to put through my rental income but I'm still entitled to £12 a year back from 09/10>. £48 not to be sniffed at

So if work provide you clothes you get money back.
If you have to buy your own work clothes (office job) you get nothing.
Makes sense.

for the record, theres no need to listen to the options, just press 2....1.....2
Also 03002003300 is a cheaper number.
Bloke on the phone couldn't find engineer, so put me on a general category with £120 relief

I just did this, but the lady changed my code to 956l? Not sure what difference that makes. I also was short on time so didn't ask for the rebate, I assume if I ring back later and ask if I'm owed one now I've changed my code then they'll say?

No. if you wash branded clothing that your work owns using your own money you get tax relief. If they pay to wash it or provide a laundry service you don't.
If you wear your own clothes not a uniform then you pay to wash your own stuff
I would rather lose by a mile because i built my own car, than win by an inch because someone else built it for me.
