Currently looking for an e46 m3 and there seems to be a lot of crap ones out there.

Tried m3cutters pistonheads and eBay.

Narrowed down a few budget up to 8k smg or manual not bothered

How good/bad/different is the smg box as I've never tried one?? Hopefully going to test drive one on Friday.
Had one I was going to leave a deposit last night but the guy just took a deposit before I could get it to him.... So was a bit gutted

Prefer a coupe to a convertible but could still be tempted if it had a hardtop.

Should've just pm'd Jambo really lol

I put a deposit down on one last week, but I have a funny feeling that the garage are going to be letting me down and i'll have to get another one. It all comes down to whether or not BMW are replacing the subframe or not. If they do, then i'm still having it, if not, then they're going to need to knock £1500 for me to have it done at Redish.

SMG is great but requires you to learn how to drive it. Internet hate them largely down to people on shoestring budgets buying second hand £50k car for £6k then moaning about large repair bills. If it breaks it WILL be expensive.

Subframe issues weren't an issue when I had mine but they are all getting a bit long in the tooth now and seem to be common. That of the internees blown it way out of proportion as it does with most things. You decide.

Great cars, massive alround ability. But they are hideously expensive to run. To put that in context for you, a guy at work has 996 turbo, bought an M3 to "runaround in" and got rid a couple of months later due to it costing more than the Porsche to run. Some people get lucky and buy one that's just had an inspII brakes tyres and everything recently change run it for a year and sell before a bill. Then there's John-d who gets his mate to do 5hrs labour for 50p then gets £100's parts for £30 so it is possible to run cheap

I wouldn't buy another tbh, but if recommend them all day long.

Check service history. Pattern is:

Oil

Inspection 1

Oil

Inspection 2

If its last service was an oil, and prior to that an insp 1 then you are looking at next service being £700 odd. Factor this into money off if needs be. A lot get sold around this time so owners don't fork out for big bills

I looked up what they involved previously and it just looked like a long list of checks? Inspection 1 had oil/filter and II had all the filters, fluids and oils included. Is that right?

Pretty much Brett.

Valve clearances on both inspections, that's where most of the time is spent. Plus things like if its a convertible its just time consuming having to fire the roll over protection system to check it works etc.

£700 is providing nothing needs doing and not at a main dealer.....

It's a 3rd car really. Have a van for work and mrs has the family wagon. So not an issue when it needs servicing etc.

If you have two other cars, why not something a bit more focused? Like an Elise or Esprit?

There's a good video on the tube showing the subframe cracks.

To be fair it looks like nothing and you'd be hard pushed to see them unless it's on a ramp and have an inspection lamp etc

I was going to say, Redish repair and reinforce the subframe for £1200 and are well recommended.
