We live in a small cul de sac.
We have 2 cats which spend most of their time outside but I know a close neighbour also has atleast one cat.

One of the other neighbours has apparently been round to see my misses today (whos at home with the 2 toddlers) and asked her to come down and clean the cat shit up from her garden.

Whilst I can appreciate non cat owners wouldn't want cat shit in their garden (as I wouldn't), I would like to do it as a nice gesture, but it'll lead to me being on call, not just for them but for the whole bloody street which will get out of hand particularly when we're not the only people with a cat, so I feel reluctant to do it the once.

Is that a bit ignorant of me or does that sound normal?

I have no issues with the neighbours scaring the cats away, chucking a cup of water, squiring them with a hose if they enter their garden, but I certainly don't want to be on call.

Im interested to hear other peoples opinions.

Just apologise and clean it up as a good will gesture. Cleaning up shit from everywhere your cat goes is going to be a tad hard and pretty daft IMO. It's only a bit of cat shit, not the end of the world. Just tell them to piss off.

The thing is, If I do it once, i'll have to do it again, and again, and again. And when the next neighbour realises im happily cleaning up all the cat shit from the other gardens, they'll want in on the free service. I'll be making a rod for my own back.

Think i'll stand my ground

Only if you let it. If you point blank refuse, that will give them more reason to moan and make an issue of it. If you agree once or twice, surely they'll see you're willing to make an effort and be a bit more forgiving. Of course I'm not saying clean EVERY single shit up your cat leaves, quite the opposite but at the same time, I'd be wanting to find a middle ground between keeping on the right side of everyone but standing your ground too. Hopefully they'll accept it eventually. Cat's and dog's shit, that's that really.

No because that's dog shit. Dog's are supposed to be trained and obedient so therefore it lies with the owner rather than the animal.

If you can train a cat to shit in a box then you can train it to not shit in other peoples gardens

Lol how can you train a cat 'not to shit in another garden'?
Do I have to follow it around until it makes it way into another garden?

when our cat started going outside he woudl visit no10 (we're at No20) and would shit in the girls bath.

she duly came round and told us off for his actions. my gf answered the door and taken a back didnt know what to say

"...erm, i am sorry, we'll have a word with him"

"oh cud ya? that'll be great, fanks"
(not the brightest cookie as you might imagine)

i looked into the legal side of things when she complained again a month later saying he was still shitting and also eat her cats food.

it turns out, after a bit of internet searching on both cat based forums and law:
it is the property owners responsibility to protect their property from intruders (humans and cats alike).
cat owners are well within their rights to permit their cat outside and offer it freedom, any neighbours not happy with this have to take their own measures.

what annoys us is she lives in a ground floor flat and leaves her kitchen window open (we can see it from our 1st floor hall way) so doesnt in anyway discourage our cat from dropping in.

DONT CLEAN IT UP.
it isnt your problem, as it isnt your property. without evidence there is no proof it is even your cat

I hate cats/cat owners so im with the clean it up and drown the things.

YOU wanted a pet cat, not your neighbours, either keep it in your house or accept that people will get pissed off that its shitting on their lawn and want you to clean it up.

Matt, legally there is no reason why he should.

it is up to the neighbours to "protect" their property

if the neighbours dont want a cat in their garden they should do something about it

why should I have to protect my garden from someone elses pet though thats what annoys me, its your pet your resposobility, id happily kick any cat off my garden if I found it shitting on there but then the owner would be all pissy with me for hurting their pet.
