I know most are pretty rubbish but list any you have seen where you think the 3d has actually worked really well, even better if you have experienced that 3d on a home setup rather than the cinema.

Like I said, Legend of the Guardians.

Don't bother with anything post converted.
Don't bother with live action, really. Latest Underworld was supposed to be filmed using all the best technology, but doesn't look anything special.

Disney and Pixar are ahead of the game as always, but again, steer clear of post converted.

Pacific Rim - Thought that worked really well in 3D, particularly as I watched it at BFI IMAX

I saw the trailer for Gravity in 3D... that looks fairly

My Bloody Valentine was average in 3D really, mainly coz it's quite a dark movie. TT Is fantastic though. Well worth the money.

How To Train Your Dragon is a good shout. Great film as well.

Toy Story 3 is alright, but not particularly impressive in 3D.

Alice in Wonderland is horrible post converted 3D with a few good CGI bits. Definitely not worth seeing in 3D.

In summary off that list:
Anything animated, documentary or pre 1980.
