Way north of 10k, without a doubt.
Mate in work has been looking for a mk1 escort 2 door for restoration for about 6 months now. Will show him this and see what he thinks

Christ. Poor cow obviously never saw a visit from the Ziebart man.
If that really is a 49 and a genuine Mex, I reckon it'll go for a bit over 5.5k. Maybe even six.
Curse you, supply and demand

If it was clean and straight and usable, it might go for something near that. If it was concourse restored, or preferably a mint, one owner, it could even go for more.
But it's basically fucked. Not a lot is salvageable.
It needs an almost inconceivable amount of work, plus a load of money spending. And a number of parts that are extremely hard to come by, just to make it sound enough to be moved safely, never mind a complete car.
I'm surprised it's bidded as high as it has already, but then that's ebay for you.
Such a shame. It prices ordinary blokes out of the market for what are essentially ordinary, everyday cars.

I've been wanting one for years.
My Dad used to do hill climb in them.
He was gutted when I showed him the prices Mexicos were going for, especially when we used to have three just sat in the garden!

It's heartbreaking isn't it Spence
I've not had a MK II for donkey's years now and couldn't afford one now. It's fucking ludicrous what they go for.
There was a NOS 1/4 panel for a 2 door MK I on ebay yesterday... fifteen hundred quid

I had a mk2 auto 2 door with a fucked engine about 16 years ago. gave £15 or £30 for it, can't remember now, but it was fuck all. I ragged the rear axle out of it along with some other bits then crushed it with a JCB and scrapped it. Worth some money now just the shell as they like them for rallying due to the bigger transmission tunnel
I would rather lose by a mile because i built my own car, than win by an inch because someone else built it for me.

Yeah, autos are always in demand Ste. Much more tunnel room, plus the autos sap power and take pretty much all the body stress away that manual cars can be subject too, so the body is usually crack free on the C pillars, no matter how old.
A cracking base for a competition or fast road car. (no pun intended)
Was yours very rusty and beyond repair?

My Uncles;

Rebuilt from 2x incomplete Mexicos, all his own work, including paint.
Sold all the parts he didn't need/want from the pair, plus the other shell, and made almost all the cost back.
Currently uses it for shows and as a Wedding Car.
That half of the family are all Ford nuts, my other Uncle still has his Mk1 Escort Rally Car he was competing with in the early 90's, and the one that owns the Yellow Mexico used to Rally a Mk2 Escort and also a Mk4 running RWD with a YB Motor. His former project which he sold for the Mexico was a Mk2 Escort RS2000 built to Rally Spec but used on the roads, and I very vividly remember a Black Mk2 RS2000 he used as a daily driver right up until the early 2000s
Bit of a Ford Fan here really. Got lots of time for the older Motorsport cars and the RS Models.

I know! And to think, I drive a bloody Vectra... shameful.
Apologies for the pic whoring, I knows it's a little OT, but some will appreciate them...
The others in the family - My cousin has had a slightly less pedigree line through the Fords, but did have a tidy Escort RST S2 before getting sensible. The White Mk1 is my other Uncles, the trailer pic was last winter when it was moved from one house to another after 15yrs in Storage...
The rest have probably been rallied into the ground, but at least that's a more acceptable death...

No, it was quite tidy, iirc it had a siezed engine and the guy didn't know how much they were worth and neither did I. At the time I thought a 30 year old car was worth fuck all. I was 17 then so 1998. I think they weren't demanding as much money back then either.

Oh Ste I feel sick now. That's terrible. Engines are two bob, but the cars are irreplaceable.
Still would have been a grand and more if it was clean
I felt bad because i've had to scrap THREE in the past That was because of terminal damage or rust though. To kill a clean one is sacrilege though.

I'd cry parting with 6 grand for that.
Suppose there's a business case, its 20 done. Still nuts.
