Has anyone had any problems paying for something with a 50 pound note? The chemist today didn't accept my money, despite the item costing 40 pounds. I then tried to change the money up at a local shop, and still got refused acceptance of the note. I even said to the guy, 'don't you have a pen to check it's real' and 'what about the queens face, doesn't her transparency show this is a real 50 pounds note' - yet, he still wasn't having it! Luckily the local bookmaker changed up my note.

At the end of the day, it's still legal tender! What's the point of it's existence if you can't bloody use it? The guy in the bookkeepers was saying the same thing as well.

Legal tender only means you must accept it in settlement of a debt. You've no debt to the chemist, and you're not about to get one because they've not offered the contract.

I've never personally had problems. But you've no legal grounds to spend them in most circumstances.

Wasn't getting in to any legalities with the issue just seems off that people can reject the note, seemingly. Obviously I'm not buying a Freddo bar with a 50 pounds note etc

Legal tender the scots love saying that.

Try getting rid of a scottish tenner in southern england. It's almost impossible.

When I worked in a supermarket, the way we had to go about checking £50 notes was mental. Scribbling on them with fancy pens and all sorts.

Any particular reason you had a 50 anyway?

I've always found that billy.big.bollocks decorators (like ojc) like to show off the cash they've earned, usually by pulling a wedge of 50 pound notes from the pockets of their paint splattered trousers.

Situation is slightly different with restaurants if you eat the food, you then have a debt, which you then can insist they take your money.

Going to try it one day. Some people on a similar thread on TruckNet saying they got free stuff because it was a small order and the cost to the restaurant to give the food away was less than to give out most of the note in change.

Any particular reason? It's not illegal to have a 50 pound note but originally my prescription was 40 pounds, then the lady said it's gone up to 50. I only had two twenties on me so borrowed a 50 pound note from a friend to pay for the item. Then they said they don't accept the 50, so I had to change it up. Once I'd changed it up they then said they had a price error and it was back to 40 again

I got rid of one at a burger wagon the other day. She tutted and took her time checking it as if I was going to say don't bother. But that was all I had in my paint splattered trousers (lol not really Ben)

She took it eventually, never had a problem tbh

Someone part paid me with a £50 note a while back. Was a bit bothered about if anywhere would accept it but I managed to get rid of it fine in the end

Never not taken a £50 note at work. I have taken a few suspicious ones but I have never had a problem moving them on.

Everybody is scared of 50's being fake, but theres more fake £5 and £10 notes than anything else, and nobody bats an eyelid when taking those in.

I very often have £50's at work and just don't care.

Plus it's not like the old days where £50 was loads and loads of cash.

Used to have a lot of foreign students buy £2 train tickets with them in my old job. Right pain in the bum
I've only personally had one once and had no problem using it.

Because if you take a fake fiver or tenner its not as big a deal as been down £50.

Also 50 notes used to be easy to fake but the new style ones have been about for ages now so the only thing thats stopping people taking them is ignorance.

I only ever have people 'scoffing' at the fact its a fifty.. If its a smaller retailer they always moan about 'their change' ...

I think the problem is they aren't seen regularly enough so not everyone knows how to detect a fake.. Ironically the most faked note is the 20 but people don't seem to mind those
