So I have been playing with time lapse videos at work this week. Had a Q5 in for excessive oil consumption, the repair being modified pistons and conrods. Here is the result of 12.5 hours at work and a few hours work with apps on the iPhone!!

22 or so for book time. 12.5 to do the job. We have done enough to work out the quickest way of doing these now 
Audi say that the engines supposed to come out the bottom with the gearbox, suspension and subframe.. It's quicker to remove the front and pull it out that way..

Yeh, someone made a mistake when they designed that engine.. It's a pile if crap. Riddled with timing chain problems too. We change the chains and tensioners when we do this repair to make sure there are no issues in that department!
To be honest there's not really a week that goes by that we don't have an engine out of something!
And yeh, book time gets charged so around 22 hours, comes in at around £3.5k full retail iirc. Depends on who's paying for the job, and to think of it I'm not sure anyone's paid full retail yet

Which engine is it?
And was the one next to it having something similar?
I'll avoid in future if I'm ever in the market for either of those

Same repair the the A5 cab next to me. It's the 2.0 TFSI engine usually with a CDNC engine code. It seems to be fine in a3 and tt. Even A4 seems to be ok. It's mostly automatic A5 cabriolets and sometimes Q5.. We are doing around one a week at the moment, but it does seem to be calming down now

Didn't the head need a skim, or do they stay flat?
Do you prefer jobs like that, or would you rather just do servicing?

No need for a skim unless there's been some overheating issues and it definately bannana'd
Prefer this kind of stuff, run of the mill servicing is boring, plus there's more money in big repairs, especially if it's under warranty still

Sales manager had a 2.0 TFSI Audi A5. Ended up with a costly bill 3 months prior to lease expiry. iirc his said it needed oil so he kept topping up, then it was buggered. I guess the same thing.
When you disappear for a bit are you reading the Haynes manual?

Bonnet switch was probably goosed.. they need to see a bonnet cycle before it rechecks the level.. stupid idea when they dont have a dipstick 
Erm, possibly... to be honest, i could probably do one of these in my sleep now, can remember most of the torque setting too.
Does it look bad that the guy next to me was doing the same job.... and i have done another since posting the video.... and so has the guy next to me...
