Last night i witnessed a worrying situation involving the complete lack of interest and response from the Police
We had just returned from Austria and was travelling along the M56 to North Wales yesterday evening when a young lady lost control of her car, hit the central reservation and then the hard shoulder barrier and completely destroyed the front of the car. Literally nothing left of it. The Fiesta stood up well as when I pulled over to help I expected the worse but found the young lady Ok, and I was able to open the doors etc
A lorry driver also stopped as suspension, tyres, glass, bumpers etc was littered all over the motorway so he blocked the inside lane
I called 999 and asked for the police and ambulance service. It took the ambulance service 28 mins to arrive - if she had been seriously injured she would have likely passed away. However after 40 mins still no police
I called them back and got this response
We are not attending for 3 reasons; first being we cannot find your location, you are on the border of North Wales and Cheshire Police so none want to attend, and its terrible weather so no services available
So after 90 mins the Highway patrol agency attended and stated she had 30 mins to get the vehicle recovered or face a £500 fine
Luckily the young lady was fine (just shocked) but its sums up the Police response at present - and they wonder why the get a bad name.....

Obviously I'm not clued up on the laws of your island kingdom, but doesn't sound like a police matter to me.
What are they going to do, arrest the barrier she hit?

Seems a bit of a strange response from the police. I thought they would attend given the location and debris.

If you fail to notify them of an accident they do not take it well,
what if the recovery needed help closing the road for safe removal ?

the point is the police did not know the situation - it could have been hit and run. They also didn't know if there was injuries as the ambulance service only spoke to them after my second call
With damage to the highway you need to notify the police and the highway agency
As stated you must always report accidents especially when the likely hood of lane closures to remove debris and damaged vehicles

Called police for a homeless drunk man sleeping in the middle of the road the other day, as he wouldn't respond. When they arrived he became more lively and took himself off the road, whacked his knob out and was pissing in front of them, and some of the time on them.
A few moments later a couple of his mates turned up, one smoking cannabis. Police searched her and found a large bag of it in her bag.
Anyway, they did nothing, patted them on the head and sent them on their way. There excuse, for not even taking there names.... There was only 6 of them on. There were 3 in the van that turned up and one PCSO.
Split up, cover a larger area and actually do your job and then some places wouldn't be such a mess.
I'm aware they're very small crimes in the grand scheme of things but that's completely not the point.

I have a big dislike for the police. I understand that they are doing a job and sometime in my miserable life I will more than likely need them. I can't fucking stand them.

Problem with the police is the salaries don't attract enough decent people anymore I've found most now are quite chavvy and males often use there position to chat women up after pulling them over.

Did you report her condition as serious?
Also you should know your location - you know which junctions you're between and there are mile markers if you don't.
Also its not really a Police matter - you need to report within 24 hours if there is damage - so she'll need to do so for HA to claim for damage to the street furniture.
They only strictly need to attend if there's injury to a third party.

The police don't tend to get involved unless a '3rd party' is injured.. Otherwise Its an issue for high ways.

Isn't it the police who would help close lanes off and manage the traffic? If there was a fiesta sprawled across a motorway I'd expect a police car or two tbh - didn't even occur to me that they might not be bothered at all.

I'm surprised they didn't care, if there is debris in the road surely there is danger to other road users and therefore attend for public safety.

her condition wasn't serious but after totally her car she was pretty shuck up as expected. I told them exactly where I was as it was just before a junction at the A494 and A540
For me having that sort of debris I expect Police to attend in the conditions last night as well as the high way agencies

HA patrol should do the clearing up.
The insurer should organise the recovery although you do normally get more time.
They may have accounted for the fact she'd not attempted to do so until they got there.
Shook up or not, if you're able to use a phone, you should try and do so.

...or how many would complain if people who stopped to help got splatted across the road because the police couldn't be arsed to attend.
This was on a motorway right? Not a Asda carpark or the like.. Have I read it wrong? The car was rattling across all three lanes with bits of it strewn across all lanes?

Reminds me of when we had those terrible storms and flash flooding everywhere where my 106 broke down in a flood and I had to wade out.
Cars were getting stuck all over the place and I had to wade out, walked up the road drenched through and some police stopped, I explained the situation and that I would try and get it moved as soon as I was sorted out and dry, but they said that it will have to be moved before then. Yeah alright then.

In life I have found people that REALLY hate the police, to
90% of the time be the absolute scum of
The country anyway. They use any reason to hate the police, yet rely on them when there is a problem.
I would have expected police to do more in this situation, however I'm not clued up on what their duties are supposed to include.
