new guidlines suggest its as good for you, and its recommended as a drink by nhs advisors. now it tastes different to water obviously, but how can it be so good for us to drink?

Bet the Americans don't see it that way. Especially as they have banned Aspartame.
Which fro some reasons we still deem safe!

The new changes are idiotic based on no real evidence against aspartame, changed purely as an advising technique to try and sell to the people sitting with tin hats on worrying about aspartame.

The science says it is safe. It probably is. But I don't believe they know the long term effects, especially combined with other foodstuffs.
I still drink about 54 litres a day

like most things, its safe in moderation.
I would expect to see rare cases where some people are drinking litres upon litres each day for years which would likely have some effect, possibly the kidneys?

i have an nhs advisor friend, and they say its perfectly fine and should be considered a fine substitute for water. this whole conversation came about due to the type of diabetes i have, now i drink about 1 litre of pepsi max a day, and on average about 4 litres of water. id prefer to drink more pepsi max.

Aspartame has been used in food and drinks since the 80s, how long a test does it need? I was reading about this last week, the latest studies from December 2013 showed absolutely no health issues providing you keep to reCommended amounts. Pepsi changed their recipe because of a drop in sales after loads of pseudo-science being thrown round in the states at the moment. Google the food babe to see what I'm on about. It's all based on total bollocks but it's affecting sales of the big brands

I don't disagree with you in general, but look at cigarettes. You need very long studies.

Nic it's worth pointing out that it has caffeine in it, so don't have it too late in the day.

I have mine with nice rum in it, so I don't have it every day.
I could quite easily though. It does seem very habit forming Nic.
