Another IT question. Yesterday i downloaded a game from a link on Mig. Pretty cool, sh1te gamplay, but u can buy cars, put boost controllers, new pistoins, NOS, turbos, superchargers etc etc on the cars which wastes some time.
Anyway, all was running fine, then a popup came up stating how the Service Control Manager (SCM) had not responded and the PC was shutting down. It then goes on a 40 or second timer and shuts the PC down. Op sys is Xp. I 've cleared theg disc up and it seems to have done the trick for the mo. But then, the other accont on the PC was also affected and i had to do the same on that account too.
Anyone got any ideas?

Have you had a look in the event viewer at the application and system logs to see any error messages? Is the game XP compliant?

Im pretty sure it is yeah. Game plays fine, till teh auto shutdown pops up.
Logged in event log, reported it, and also done a search on the MS website, it comes up with nothing regarding the SCM bar its failed.
(the error message in EV)
The Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 60000 milliseconds: Reboot the machine.

bugger, sloppy coding in the game perhaps? I was going to suggest copying and pasting the error message in ms tech net. unfortunately you get techincal babble back in return

You my furry little friend have contracted the latest virus - LoveSan
update all your virus software and do a full scan, not to do with the game, are you online when it does it because the virus scans for open ports on your PC, therefore it cant do it offline, you need to be online for it to destruct you!!!!!!!!

Gav, wont matter what anti virus you have... its virtually unstopable... plus it only affects people on XP... if you dont get it... your just lucky.
It does not come from a game... just a coninsidence really.

Actually, if your anti-virus is up-to-date, it detects it and prevents it infecting your machine......so, keep things up-to-date!

Taken from Mcafee:
All Users:
Use the 4284 DAT files for detection and removal. The 4283 DAT files will detect this threat as a variant of Exploit-DcomRpc.

If your anti-virus wasn't updated yesterday, as soon as the virus was discovered, anti-virus programs wouldn't detect it (with maybe the exception of Mcafee, which detected it as something else).
Anyone else, even if their virus-pattern-file was 2 days old, would have the possibility of being infected.
A decent firewall would stop the attack anyway, even if you were infected......makes you wonder why this many people who use the internet either don't have firewalls, or haven't set them up properly if they do.
