Yea but this is Corsasport m8.

i know i bet people see an M3 and then think to themselves "yeah, thats a nice car you got, but my corsa will be better in the snow"

WINNING

A woman at work made this exact point today, she hasn't even read this thread.

She was blabbering on about her corsa she has owned for 9 years and said 'I love it in the winter, when I drive past all the broken down bmw's in the snow.'

Same, was speaking to the Mrs mum about us getting a 1 Series, first thing she said was, 'that will be rubbish in the snow'.

OK so i'll buy a different car for the sake of a few days a year.

I use my car less when I have the flu than I do in the snow. It's not an issue at all tbh unless you live somewhere remote or hilly.

Tell her to get winter tyres and she'll be quicker than a 4wd with summer ones.

Well in that case you better invest in a pack of huskies and a sledge.

http://www.evo.co.uk/news/evonews/248524/winter_tyres_tested.html

"Would four-wheel drive help? We had an Evo X FQ-330 on summer rubber to hand. It managed a 2m29s, 25sec adrift of the winter-tyred XF. Point proved. To get the standard XFR to perform a 0-60mph time at all, I had to to start on wet tarmac and it still took 15.3sec – the cold weather tyres cut that to 8.9sec."

I was thinking a 4x4 type vehicle. Like a Landrover.

In snow:
Landrover with winter tyres > Landrover with summer tyres

Correct. I thought you were implying a car with winter tyres would outperform a 4x4 on summer tyres. And by 4x4 I was thinking a proper capable offroad type vehicle, missed that you put 4WD.

Depends on the 4x4 I guess. I bet some are shite in the snow compared to a RWD with winter tyres.

I remember seeing a Lexus 4x4 go sideways on the A40 in the snow at low speed, when my shit car was doing ok.

i think the problem is, people with no driving skill go out and buy a 4x4 and presume it will make driving in snow effortless, as if they have fixed the problem

This lexus 4x4 thing was just driving straight on a light dusting

All M3 owners had to stop, park up and walk home

Yeah I think people think they can suddenly do 60mph if they have a 4x4, which they can but they'll still go straight on when they steer or brake

4x4 are really good for getting up and down hills though, especially with hill descent control.

I seen quite a few Merc C classes stuck in the snow. The wee Ford Ka just trundled along with no drama's.

Some tool in a Clio V6 must have fancied his chances too.It didn't end well though. The car was dumped at the side of the road after it had a fight with a kerb. The kerb won.Bumper was fuked.

I used that when I borrowed my friend's old X3 in the winter 2 years ago. Was great!

Thing is, I know they should be quick, but I've never really seen one in the flesh go that fast. I'm a bit worried they're just too heavy.

For example, when I had a few bits on my s2000 (ecu, manifold, exhaust) I raced one off a set of lights at santa pod and was pulling away up to 110 - then driving back to the paddock he said 'Woah, thats goes alright doesn't it?' ...

Ok my car no longer has those bits on it any more, so I know an m3 would be quicker - but even so, I would've expected the m3 (if they're as quick as they should be) to go straight past.

Same way, I've seen them on top gear / fifth gear and they're clearly track weapons - but whenever I've actually seen one on track at a track day they've been slow and I've overtaken it (even in the days of my 106 gti).

Ultimately, how good are they on track?

So in conclusion Paul. What you want is a 4x4 for snow driving.

don't see them driving fast on top gear, all they do is powerslide into a corner then cut to a different camera angle before exiting the corner as jeremy hasn't got the skills to keep it going

I had exclusive use of the KA in the snow, was FANTASTIC

Skinny bike tyres with like 20 PSI in them, never got stuck or anything. Shoved a bit of cardboard in the bumper to stop the coolant temp dropping and just kept some essentials in the boot. Winning.

M3 CSL, almost as good as an F1 car, not quite as good a drivers car though
