Will, what kinda support calls do you get?
network is down help
we had a blip in our applications, can you investigate if the network flapped, or we exceeded bandwidth on our links.
vpn user can't get in, sort it out
vpn user is expericing latency, find out why
link is down for remote trader, can you confirm
mostly like that, really boring tbh, need a new job.

Shit the bed frank, i've covered that kinda stuff (not so much latency issues). Checking bandwith using performance logs, and also using a fancy site our main company has setup etc..
Most of ours is due to a user visiting a site, and hammering the network (only use half meg lines) as they have logged in using the wrong method and are pulling their profiles down. Or some kinda outgoing spike.
Usual fix, reboot server, restart services, or reboot router. Similar thing or more detailed?

its all at the network level mate, so if they are reporting issues I will log onto the router (its all cisco stuff), check the logs to see if the routing processes have had a peer drop or depending on the circuit check if there are errors on the line, then move up the ladder looking at stuff like packet loss (we build systems to monitor it), check bandwidth etc. For example if bandwidth was getting cained then we'd look at the transaction tables to see what source/destination hosts are smashing up all the bandwidth and then identify the application by the port number and protocol type.
We dont really deal with the application layer.

kinda, but where I work rebooting anything other than a windows based machine is a cop out, when you're dealing with linux/solaris/cisco systems you can fix 99% of the issues without reloading the device.

my job is more involved, but if I'm totally honest apart from the little projects we've had the majority of our support calls in the last 6 months have been regarding the above. I've had some days where I've had to review packet capture files trying to work out why multicast data destined for a certain VLAN was leaking into another. But because the majority at the moment is investigating why their links are fucking up I'm bored as fuck.
