http://www.theguardian.com/football/2013/sep/04/manchester-united-ander-herrera-transfer-farce
quote: United are taken aback, for example, by the latest suggestion they challenged Arsenal for Mesut Ozil. The truth is that United and Manchester City were both offered the player three weeks ago. United turned it down because they had already made up their mind that Wayne Rooney would not be leaving and they did not want to break their transfer record, paying upwards of £40m, for someone who plays in the same position.
Their thinking also took into account they have Shinji Kagawa

Supposedly were offered a WC one, decided they didn't need one, then bought an okay one.

I also heard that we were offered Ozil earlier than anyone else due to the Higuain farce where RM admitted they had moved goalposts??

In summary Ozil was urged out of Madrid and joined Arsenal as a last resort, he really wanted to go to City or United, but as they weren't interested ended up with the Gunners.

Not as bad as paying £86m for someone who has had 1 good season.

Which makes no sense at all. "Here, we hear you want a world class creative midfielder, we have one that wants to move to you, you interested?" "Nah, want Fellani"

The Ozil deal to Arsenal didn't all happen on deadline day you know? It was 3 weeks in the making.

So City and United weren't interested in Ozil?
Thats the stupidest thing you've ever posted Steve. Well done.

I reckon if Moyes could have signed Ozil, he wouldn't have given a shit about an already unsettled Rooney's feelings.

As Moyes said "We're in for all the best players"
Ozil ticks that box for me.

Depends how m uch he wants Rooney to stay, dont forget Rooney going is more than just the fact you are losing him, you are then giving an opportunity for a rival to take advantage, so there is more value I think in turning down Ozil to keep Rooney, even if perhaps Ozil is a bit better.

It's the only reason I can see to turn down Ozil. If Rooney can give us 100% this season then that'll be like a new signing in itself. He wasn't anywhere near his best last season.

yep, can definitely see a team turning down a world class player who's much much better than what they have for the position to use a guy who quite clearly wants to leave and is not even the same position and a guy who was barely used the previous season and is quite clearly not in favour. yep, sounds legit
And obvs yes, city would clearly rather use Samir Nasri than one of the top top playmakers around, a guy who just admitted he had the worst season of his life :/
This will give you the inside track from a guy very closely connected with arsenal but quite unbiased

by a bit better, do you mean about 5x ?? Rooney is not, and never will be, a #10 playmaker. He's a striker, a centre forward, diff positions.
Kagawa is an awesome player. We had a deal lined up to sign him before you guys paid a ridic sum and we went for Cazorla instead. Just actually use him this year and youll be fine :/
