In terms of number of people who died/where displaced yes it is. This has no baring on them being affluent at all though. Theirs was a large earthquake. The advent of a quake being coupled with a tsunami is what has everyone's attention as it's a very rare. Also it is something that has a legend attached and strikes fear and intrigue I to the hearts of everyone.
The nuclear aspect has obviously heightened the drama as everyone loves a good bit nuclear bashing/terror.

Either way. I'm very lucky to inhabit this small island.
