cpu and memory do nothing you could run the slowest cpu and very basic memory but run some decent amd gpu's in crossfire with a powerfull psu and your away

I realise a powerful GPU can do some number crunching but surely its all just number crunching. If you threw enough CPUs you would have the raw power to do the work.

Not when the CPUs are hundreds or thousands of times slower than GPUs at that sort of operation.
