It wouldn't be an acurate test because you need back box pressure for the engine to function 100%.

i'd look into how old the leads are and think of changing them, i had lots of prob's and it was down to leads.
when u last clean the air filter?

make sure the sensors are clean
a dogy sensor can retard the engine

If u just take the exhaust of before the cat and drive it the car will run badly as there is no backpressure for engine operations.
Also if you take the cat out you can see for yourself what condition its in, you can visually check it, else you can listen to see how badly it rattles.

update for the weekend...
done a few jobs...
Changed Oil / Coolant
checked AFM or whatever the hell it is, MAP, all connections to & from, EGR valve, everything seems ok
Re-routed the HT leads again, condition seems to be ok except for the one on cyl 3 where connected to the dis-pack
car does seem to pull better now, still a bit giddish at certain RPM in the gears, but seems to be going better

i had fcuked leads and u couldn't tell they were buggered, until i opened the bonnet at night with engine on and saw sparks flying everywhere
