Good man, let me know! I should be a bloody mechanic LOL, pot guess last on the list was crank sensor but we'll see... Doubt it will be the cat - they dont just block up your exhaust just like that, it gets progressively worse over time...

bump starting a car can knacker the cat because you are getting unburnt fuel into the exhaust,it normally tells you in most handbooks about it.

Can it not stretch the timing belt too?
Unless the car's on a timing chain, of course.

Can anyone explain in simple terms what the crank shaft sensor does? Just interested to know why it affects the way the car runs. Im not a font of knowledge when it comes to engines you see!

Im asssuming you have a 1.2 or 1.0 if it has a chain? I have a 50K old X12XE lump in the garage just waiting to get rid! Crank sensor detects the position of the crank as it rotates, which in turn tells the ECU to tell the injectors when to fire etc in simple terms it effects the timing of the engine. Should have thrown up a ECU warning light though if it was duff? £112 isnt THAT bad to get you back on the road though cosidering you could have gone and got all the bits and replaced the sensors one-by-one trial and error style...

Glad you got it going again and if you ever need parts for the 1.2 16v ive got a whole GOOD engine in the garage lol...

Car had a good run out last night, did about 80 miles without a problem so hopefully thats the end of it.

TOMAS - Yes it’s a 1.2 16v so I'll have to remember you might have a spare engine if I need anything or the whole engine, but hopefully I wont do!!!

Thanks to everyone for your help and ideas to what the problem could of been
