2000 the headgaskets changed from compressed cork to compressed metal
try to get a hybrid, Mix of new gasket with no egr valve, most non egr valves had anything up to 130bhp,(if the engine has two prongs on the front its non egr), dont get a very late one, cats are in the downpipe, and you wont be able to fit a manifold for a reasonable price

as for the heads, i was told that from the 98 models (with leather) had a stronger head and gasket, not just the gasket.

Watch out for dodgy gear boxes. Tend to have problems with 2nd and reverse. Also the revs going up and down randomly.

like it was said before check if the gearbox is stiff in any of the gears or makes any noises. take it up to high 5000-6000 revs up to third then get out and smell for any burning oil.
i went through 3 gearboxes when i had mine and they aint cheap to replace.
i never had any other problem with the car.

My mates GTi had an L.A.D 160 conversion when he bought it plus then he added a Viper induction, custom side exit exhausts, some wild reprofiled cams and then a live remap. Build quality was quite a bit better than Saxos and exterior and interior styling also alot nicer. Had the back stripped out. It fucking flew

power? about 170-175 at a guess. Maybe more. Was RR'd at 162bhp before the cams and remap but wasn't RR'd afterwards

Thjere not to bad. As has been said gearboxes and driveshafts are crap... THe dodgy idle problem is a 5 minute fix usually, jst dirty idle control valve..
Dont get a GTi though get a real 106 like mine.. lol

Wooo, so if they are looked after and not given death all the time they should be fairly reliable?
Just you always hear how bad french cars are all the time.
Do like that red one but want the GTi for the leather lol
So if i look at the 98/99 model? that should avoid the dodgy head gaskets and i should get leather?
