Its the weight of the needle i reckon, it will struggle to rise half way, but once past it gravity takes over, the only half decent explanation.

Both my nova and my corsa sport last'd ages in the top half and droped right down after half way, but 30 mpg outa 1.2 you must have a heavy right foot. I get 38 mpg all day long in a clio 172 and i thrash it.

my grandad when ever he gets to half a tank fills it up and hes says it lasts longer than full tank

The first half seems to last forever then the last half goes really quick. Anyone else find this?

Oh and I'm parked on a perfectly straight bit of road called my drive

my gauge malfunctions.
it reads 20litres when it's full to the brim, and the needle almost goes horizontal before the light comes on

i use the oddometer, the 306 does the same, first bit takes ages then last bit is gone in the flash, can't trust the light as that comes on if you fly around a corner etc.

Or 38MPG, in real figures. The 306 has a bigger tank, so distance on a full tank isn't a valid comparison. But yes, it's definitely handy.

I think the reason cars do this is the fact that on a full tank the fuel cant slosh around so you use less fuel. As the tank empties the fuel can move around more and so it goes down quicker.

also the fuel gauge will only measure to the top of the tank and not the filler pipe.

fuel goes down quicker after half due to the shape of the tank
