Why do people say the engines are crap and weak? The 1.8 for example is practically a race engine in a road car. Fair enough they suffer from head gasket failure, but in the correct car ie with sufficient cooling they will not fail.

Put an F1 engine in a road car and see how long it last before it over heats etc!

The engine isn't the best design wise, its far from a bad engine though.

thats the point tho, they dont put them in the correct car and they fail. so there shit.

This about head gaskets is a load of shoot. I had a Metro GTI with a 1.4 in it. I ran it for 6 months with a fucked water pump and a shit radiator. It got thrashed every day. It gave me no problems.

The 1.4 is a great little engine IMO.

Also if the HG has been done right the first time and the head skimmed, it wont keep going and going

I have to disagree here, I know about 5people and 3 have had the headgasket done, one was bout 45k, others were approx 20k!!!
but then again my mate has had a 1.4 its 51reg and only had gearbox problems and he rags hell out of it.

Mine was on an M plate. Maybe the newer engines are worse for this than the old ones?
