Thats a good point actually, I haven't asked her what she intends to do with the 1k profit she makes I reckon thats what she wants to do the cheeky bint well reminded.

In fact....the couple of weeks you would have to wait book a holiday then as you walk off the plane go and collect your brand new VXR

Sell private if you can!!! Its win win all the way, you get what you want for your car then have a stronger hand at the dealers to negotiate a better price on the one your buying!!

sounds tempting tbh you are always going to lose money on a car, the dealership paying the loan doesn't sound at all bad

Parkers price for 53 GSi :

Vauxhall Astra Hatchback (98-04)
2.0i 16V GSi Turbo 3d 2003/53
Average mileage 30,000 miles
Original Price £16,670
Franchised Dealer £9,995
Independent Dealer £9,260
Private Good £8,010
Private Poor £6,175
Part Exchange £7,205

PX is pretty good BUT just how much do they have to play with on the VXR?! You will find there actually discounting the car your taking, not giving you more on the one your trading in!! You would get it for £1k less without the trade in & sell the GSi quick sale for 500+ more than the stealership will give you.

WIN WIN WIN!!!

I would get the 8k from the dealer and pay off the loan. Saves the hassle of selling the car.

Parkers always undervalue.

They aren't discounting the price of the VXR because they are giving Rachel 8k cheque once the finance would have been sorted and then take Rachels car.

Tell them to fcuk off...

Sell it privately...going in with cash puts you in a far better position...

You will owe less on the finance...

go back and ask for more for the Gsi. if there max was 8K they would have offered 7 first, then if you refused, 7.5 then 8.......

ask for 9k, see their reaction, theres no harm in trying.

Its made to look like there giving you more money but on the full scale of things their just discounting the car your buying!! That discount would still be there without a trade in!! Trust me ive been duped a stealership before!!

If you can sell your own car you'll always get a better deal!!

You're getting OK money for the Astra (trade in wise anyway)

The VXR is up at a good price

Its a nice colour, with the better wheels & you both clearly like it

When you look at it like that I'd say you'd regret not buying it.

No one has mentioned the cost of the finance, what rate are they offering you, how much will the total repayment be?

Im thinking that the dealer is very keen to do this as they will be making a fair whack off the finance.

TBH i think you would be lucky to get 9k for an 03 gsi.

Take the cheque, they obviously want you to buy the car, so maybe get them to throw in some extra's??

I would go with what they offered, you could try for more but i doubt they'll budge anymore. £8k is good for a trade in and you could get £9k for it private but its not guarenteed, prices have dropped a lot since the VXR came out, i know because i bought an SRi T in Feb as i couldnt afford a GSI, now i could get one for what i paid for the SRi. You could also be waiting a while to sell the Gsi, just because they're popular doesnt mean you'll sell it easy.

dealers come out with so much crap its untrue.

when i was selling my megane, book price was 4.3k, i was willing to let it do p/x for 3k, dealer wouldve had it on a forecourt for 4.5-5k but i feel they get too greedy, they only offered me 2k when i went to look at the leon, my megane was immaculate and had all the extras leather etc, yet they offered me 2k ??

cheeky bastards had a 1.6 lesser spec model on the forecourts for 4.5k aswell

Of course they'll offer you a lot less than what its worth its business, they still have to sell it with a warrenty etc and make some money on it

I've never felt offended by what a dealer offers. They've running a business at the end of the day.

You're obviously going to the wrong places or not being taken seriously if you get insulted. I got 11k for my coupe, there was one on the forecourt for 10995.

yes i think the place i went to was the wrong place as you put it, to be honest after that i didnt try another p/x, i bit the bullet and sold privately, which if you can afford the time to do is always best

Selling privately is a pain in the ass though. Advertising it, people come round don't want it etc. etc. You need to factor all that in. I would happily lose money to not have to waste time on those things and risk dodgy payment etc.

I also think timing is a bit part of the deal. It would appear that this dealer has someone lined up for Rachs GSi, therefore it might be the right time to make some cheeky suggestions on the price of the new one.
