Everyone I know that works in the motor trade hates it & wants out. According to my neighbour who has worked in parts for Merc since leaving school (he's 29 now, so been there about 13yrs) the pays shit & theres very little scope for promotion. IMO if you wish to retrain in anything decent you have to start from scratch & if that means loosing everything then so be it!!

you could start off in parts and work your way to other areas if you wanted, for example, service or sales

tbh i think most ppl don't enjoy the job they do, and it's always a nice thought of a change.

I thought you were interested in joining the military?
I work at the MOD with several military people who have finished their field service and have taken desk positions and they all say its a fantastic long term career.

My mate worked at Volvo in Reading in the parts department and was on 17k a year and that was 3 or 4 years ago.
He worked 8.30 - 6pm and 1 Saturday a month, I could cope with that.

i say dont, u may love it doing wee things around our own car and being on here etc, but working in motortrade is a diff story. i need a way out, trying to plan my escape route now for when i am 30 to have a new career to move to.
motortrade is big time underpaid compared with other trades and i dont think i could physically do my job when im 50 etc

Only thing I dont like about working in the motor trade, is common place with my skills wherever I go really, tbh. Sales will always be crap hours, but its the weekends that really kills me. The money is ok, but on the down side, I know I'm never gonna earn over £50k a year - I just dont have the patience to work with the type of customers and franchises need to earn thaat kinda dough(merc's, bmw, porsche, audi etc.) Theyre all wanky customers(90% at least!)

yeah, car supermarkets, a mate of mine works for autoplanet in maidstone. he's 'apparently' taken home like 4's before. but staff turnover is quite high as its very target orientated, cant cut it, you're out, pretty much. Where i am is a lot more relaxed, although i am getting the hump with idiot fucking customers at the moment.

know a guy who works for BMW as sales guy, he can earn some serious wonger, has taken home over 5k a month before, and gets a mini to use at worst, sometimes 330s or even 6 series!
my only advice is, dont be a manager at a supermarket!
