Noooo, you buy some second hand billies from rallyusedparts.com or somewhere
We're talking budget here, nothing would be new unless it had to be

quite fancy doing a Nova as the next project heap.
base model or pre 2.0 16v'd.. to get the brakes/suspension etc...
ideal would be a 1.6 16v road car.... to bastardise

I'd like to do the nova.... but would not rule out a 205/106 again...
106 with 1.6 16v engine and sorted brakes/susp
OR
205 with S16 engine and susp/rakes
Our old 205
Car - 400
seats - 80
harnesses - 60
rear beam - 180 (with brakes)
suspension - 150
cage - 300
exhaust - 180
OMP upper/lower braces - 100
aprox 1500
sold the interior leather/stereo etc for a few hundred in total but that went on things like brake lines, bias adjusters
not including any raw materials or shitas a bit of welding was done etc.
No labour charges either

Personally, I wouldn't go for a Nova knowing there are better handling cars out there.
I mean, you said that your 205 was more fun than your Corsa, a Nova is going to be pretty much the same as your Corsa, give or take a few little differences...

its was more fun as i got to use it
The handling would have been better on the corsa but it always felt like it was beign made to handle... the pug was really neatral with the back end pretty must steerable into corners to change the lines etc... corsa was just a bit less predictable on the limit.... also had about 100bhp more

Does it have to be FWD?
£1500 would get you a Porsche 924 which would be far more fun than a 205/Corsa/Nova/106 IMO

XR2s are only good with Zetecs in, so you might as well buy a solid, base model Fiesta, then you've got the trouble you always have with conversions though.

My mate just sold his AX GTS... was a weapon on track and was due him under 1500 im sure..
Was an ax GTi to begin with, then a vts engine put in, pugsport and 4 branch, decent suspension, cage, bucket and mega strippage..
Heres a few pics of it in action..

for any decent budget track car imo there are only three major requirements........
A decent diff
decent suspension and geometry set up
decent tyres (i.e inters etc)
Those three items alone can be more valuable than any power gain on certain tracks. With the added bonus that you can then tune the engine or whatever to improve straight line speed. The cheapest mods already mentioned is to fully strip it, and i mean fully lol. As a few of you have seen mine is pretty much bare shell with a cage, road legal as i use it from time to time. Then once stripped move a few items around to even out the balance
Another good pointer is to stitch weld the shell, we did my engine bay and rear suspension points at inch for inch like normal and the rest of the car using an inch for every 2 pattern. This made a noticable difference to the feel of the car and cost nothing but about 4kg in weight
As for what car to get, once you start messing they all become equal to an extent, you cant compare their standard claims to modified versions
